BBC NEWS | UK | England | Devon | Woman claims hugs caused cancer — This is kind of an odd and pathetic story. For some reason it rings true. Give the women the pittance she is asking for. Sad.
Debbie Brewer has been diagnosed with mesolthelioma and believes she was exposed to it by her father, who died from lung cancer last year. Her father was an asbestos lagger at the MoD’s Devonport dockyard in 1966. The MoD said if they were liable they would try to settle a claim quickly without the need for a court case. Mrs Brewer was six years old when her father worked at Devonport dockyard in 1966 and would hug him when he returned home.
“I have got three children and I expect to be there for them, and I don’t know if I am going to be”
Debbie BrewerAn inquest into her father’s death in August 2006 found he had died from small cell lung cancer, which was linked to asbestos. Mrs Brewer first started having breathing difficulties in 1994 but was not diagnosed with mesolthelioma until November last year. Her condition is terminal. Cases of mesolthelioma, cancer of the lining of the lung, can lie dormant for 40 years before surfacing.
Mrs Brewer says the exposure as a child was the only time she would have been linked to asbestos.

It is odd, indeed… however after reading it, it doesn’t seem pathetic at all. Sad, sad story.
My father in law died last year from mesolthelioma last year from asbestos exposure 30 years ago. This woman’s claim is completely inaccurate. It’s because her father would come home with asbestos fibres still attached to him, the family would be exposed. My mother in law was tested after my father in law was diagnosed since she would wash his clothes from work, and it appears she is ok. It’s just the BBC playing up the headline to get attention, which in this case is shameful since cancer it of itself is not contagious.
My Uncle worked as a steam pipe fitter at a shipyard. He wrapped pipes all day in asbestos and came home covered in fibers. Over the years the house became covered with fibers. He suffered from emphysema for years before the cancer got him. I have no doubt that years of indirect exposure caused this woman’s cancer.
Maybe hugs can cure her.
Dr. Spock wins again.
sounds like an asbestos problem – there was as asbestos mine near where i grew up, and the reason they closed was cuz they got sued into bankruptcy – lots of health issues.
