When Christians get political, they often do so because they believe that they have God on their side. This is true whether they are progressive or conservative, and throughout most of American history there have been both. (You’d think that the conflicting claims about what God wants would lead to more doubting, but here we are.) Looking over the long history of people claiming to be speaking for God’s wishes, it quickly becomes evident that Christians are frequently on the wrong side of history. Here are 10 things that American Christians of the conservative stripe got completely wrong when they were so sure they were speaking on God’s behalf.
[…]
1) Slavery
2) Women’s suffrage
3) Evolution
4) Pain relief for childbirth
5) Catholics
6) Prohibition
7) Segregation
8) Contraception
9) School prayer
10) Marriage equality

They missed one: the belief that our country’s founding fathers were Christians.

    1) Slavery
    6) Prohibition
    7) Segregation

    Are Orwellian Progressive history revisions.
-Main opposition to slavery and winning side in the end were Christians. Who run the Underground Railroad? – Atheists? Progressive minded (though well before crystallization of Progressivism early in 20th Century) groups and leaders who placed good of their society (South) before individual right (of a slave) were slavery driving forces.
-Prohibition arise directly from early Progressive movement, using Church (same as current Progressives try and some times succeed, say Obama Church of 20 years case) and manipulating it for Progressive control. Prohibition=Bloomberg ban on soda; FDA ban on trans fats; Michele O’ meddling in school children’s lunch;…
-Segregation is another pre-Progressive rooted “good of the society as is in South” before “individual rights of Black people” item that unlike slavery survived and thrived under modern Progressives (who initially segregated US Army? – Progressive President Wilson… Historical fact). Progressive Democrats were the main source of the KKK and related evils. Church fought this, but for Progressive taken-over branches as in (2).

Progressive poster apologizing for these and other similar outrages (Hitler, Stalin, Mao, Killing Fields, Eugenics,…) is in order.

    • What? The moth is always drawn to the flame? says:

Slavery is a universal condition; everyone is a slave and always will be in his lifetime. It is also purely a psychological position.

      The slave enslaves himself.

Religion, bad men, pussy, whatever, is an excuse that the slave uses to absolve himself of the responsibility for enslaving himself.

Freedom and liberty are the lights at the ends of the tunnel of life, and achieved before birth and upon death.

Drink, pot, drugs, commiserating, blaming, do nothing to stem self enslavement, and, in fact, perpetuate it.

I’m studying Dvorak to figure out his level of enslavement. Curry is nicely enslaved.

    • Hyph3n says:

“[Slavery] was established by decree of Almighty God…it is sanctioned in the Bible, in both Testaments, from Genesis to Revelation…it has existed in all ages, has been found among the people of the highest civilization, and in nations of the highest proficiency in the arts.” – Jefferson Davis, President, Confederate States of America

      • xyz says:

Jefferson Davis knew nothing about the Bible, nor was he a true Chrisitan. His God is money and he rebelled against God by taking up arm to rebel the government. If you truly want to know what the Bible teaches, go read the bible yourselves. Jeremiah 34. Jer 34:17 “Therefore, thus says the LORD: You have not obeyed me by proclaiming liberty, every one to his brother and to his neighbor; behold, I proclaim to you liberty to the sword, to pestilence, and to famine, declares the LORD. I will make you a horror to all the kingdoms of the earth. ” This is what God proclaimed to the ancient kingdom of Judah when the apostate ruling class of Judah want to institute slavery. For this reason, God put an end to the kingdom of Judah through Babylonian captivity. The Book of Revelation speaks about a future Babylon, “Babylon the Great” as the “Mother of Prostitute and the Abomination of the Earth” (Rev 17). She represent a religious, economic and social system that advocate and enforce slavery for the sake of profits and material gain (Rev 18:13). God pronounced the fallen of Babylon the Great as His judgement upon her idolatry and inequity in the second angle’s message (Rev 14, 18). Jesus come to free us from slavery–we are born slaves to the demonic force that is ruling in both our society and in our own sinful nature, we are also slaves to death (Hebrews 2:14-15). Jesus come to redeem us from slavery to the devil and to death. He come to give us the truth: “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples,
and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:31-32). So if you truly want to be free, come to know Jesus Christ and be his disciple. Study the Bible diligently and receive the the Holy Spirit, Spirit of Truth (John 16). Don’t be misled by those who profess to be a Christian, yet advocate for a a false Christianity, nor by those who think themselves irreligious and free, yet under a delusion. It take the divine act of God to deliver us from slavery of all sins and their consequences–the death.

        • So What? says:

          Alfie quotes it better.

        • Hyph3n says:

“All who are under the yoke of slavery should consider their masters worthy of full respect, so that God’s name and our teaching may not be slandered.” 1 Timothy 6:1

I don’t think Paul is talking about the slavery of sin here. But to be fair, if you look hard enough, you can find a Bible passage supporting any viewpoint.

  2. Father Flannagan says:

They got “Catholics” wrong. WTFuck does that even mean?

    • deowll says:

God question. I thought real Catholics, the ones in good standing with their bishops, were Conservative Christians or at least the ones I keep tabs on seem to be.

Nancy P. my have claimed to be a Catholic but her bishops don’t seem to think so.

    • Uncle Dave says:

Sounds like you didn’t read the article.

      • Father Flannagan says:

You’re correct, like others I couldn’t get beyond the Pelosi worship.

    • bobbo, the pragmatic existential evangelical anti-theist says:

Sad when atheists know the history/culture/dogma of religious orders better than their claimed adherents.

(Sarc/ON) USA is not only founded on Christian Principles (Sarc/Off) but also PROTESTANT ones. Protestants follow their Lord Jesus Christ. Every good rightwingnutreligiousloon knows that Catholics worship and are under the control of the Pope in Rome…some Italian guy===NOT an American.

Next Up: Ever hear of the Reformation? Luther????? ……………………………………………….. Bueller?

      Calling Cardinal Bueller……………..

      • Father Flannagan says:

Lacking a dog in this fight still have to counter.

There is so much wrong with your statement. Most glaring is that atheist know history better than blah blah blah. Ending with Catholics worship of the Pope.

Would you like to read some statements form the founding fathers regarding their aethest beliefs? Statements from Franklin, Adams, Jefferson, Hamilton, Hancock, etc, etc.

        But apparently you dither.

        http://www.wallbuilders.com/libissuesarticles.asp?id=8755

        • bobbo, the pragmatic existential evangelical anti-theist says:

Well FF, as so many do here, you continue to completely MISS THE POINT. My comment was NOT about what I think but rather what Conservative Christians in the USA think.

See the difference? Conservative Christians vs a pragmatic existential evangelical anti-theist?

Try to find the bouncing ball, then stay focused on it.

YOU SAID you didn’t know what having Catholics on the list of things the Rightwingnuts got WRONG. I told you. With that input, do you continue to remain uninformed, or more unlikely, do you disagree and think it means something else?

          Hmmmmmm?

          • Father Flannagan says:

(Sarc/ON) USA is not only founded on Christian Principles (Sarc/Off)

Wrong whether you like it or no.

          • bobbo, the pragmatic existential evangelical anti-theist says:

Everything (Idea) is connected by some extension to every other thing (Idea).

…..But, in the main, USA FF (Founding Fathers) were theists, reformers, free thinkers, and advocates of the Enlightenment.

Indeed, they were as a group pragmatic progressives wanting little to do with the Catholic Church and its hide bound out of touch dogma.

            We choose what we believe.

    • Hyph3n says:

The KKK was very much an anti-Catholic group, and it’s been said prohibition was a direct attack on Catholics who used alcohol in their service.

When I was a kid, someone put a poster on the store I worked at railing against the evil Papists. This was in the 80’s. They may be the darlings of the Conservative movement, but it wasn’t so long ago they were the Mormons to these same groups.

  3. MikeN says:

One thing that conservative Christians got wrong and continue to get wrong is believing in the Christianness of liberals, when in fact these liberals wish to destroy their church.

    • bobbo, the pragmatic existential evangelical anti-theist says:

Say Mickey—how often do you get confused by the simple straight forward presentation of ideas?

You know?==Conservative Christians as opposed to Liberal Christians. …. not the way you fubar’ed the subject in your standard ham fisted TeaParty way by opposing Conservative Christians with the Christianness (sic) of Liberals.

Low brow cranial calcification of the type that must make you a regular attending Chruch Deacon?

      Silly Human.

    • Greg Allen says:

      MikeN,

Since when do conservative Christians think we liberal Christians are true believers?

      You clearly don’t.

As a liberal Christian, I will tell you that conservative Christians seem to hate us worse than they hate the atheists.

And destroy the church? We liberal Christians save the church by keeping it relevant.

  4. Dallas says:

    Good article .
Clearly, because of these crimes against the wishes of Jesus, most are now in or will be sent to a lake of fire for eternity.
    Good.

  5. MikeN says:

What Christians got wrong was believing Obama’s lies about ‘being my brother’s keeper’.

She was a nurse for 35 years and championed Obamacare, until she received a letter from her insurance company saying it was canceling her policy.

“I was really shocked … all of my hopes were sort of dashed,” Wagner said. “’Oh my gosh President Obama, this is not what we hoped for, it’s not what we were told.’ “

    • Dallas says:

Shame on Christians for worshiping Insurance companies and believing their policies were everlasting

    • Greg Allen says:

If she was a nurse… she knows those cancellation letters are the fault of the rat_bastard insurance companies. Only fools blame Obama for that.

  6. Nagerst says:

There are wins for christians in politics as well. Managed to alter the pledge of allegiance by adding “under god” in the fifties. Added in god we trust to the money and the christian churches was granted tax free status.

  7. bobbo, the pragmatic existential evangelical anti-theist says:

I learned this about a year ago from a post in this very forum: “If religion could be reasoned with, it wouldn’t exist.”

….. bout the same with every other dogma given expression herein.

    Silly Hoomans.

  8. Mextli says:

I followed the link to read the story and the first thing I get is a pop-up.

“Stand with EMILY’s List to take back the House and get Nancy Pelosi her gavel back.”

    Objectivity took flight with that.

    • bobbo, the pragmatic existential evangelical anti-theist says:

      How come?

      Progressive/Liberal: seeking change.
      Conservative/Retarded: maintaining status quo.

AlterNet: a Progressive/Liberal organization seeking changes.

      Nextlie: Define “objectivity.”

      • Mextli says:

My objectivity took flight when I saw the site was, IMHO, pushing an agenda. Nothing to learn there just dogma. If I wanted dogma I would just listen to Barry on TV 24/7.

BTW you state this as if it were axiomatic.
        “Progressive/Liberal: seeking change.
        Conservative/Retarded: maintaining status quo.”

It’s just a smug liberal talking point.

        • bobbo, the pragmatic existential evangelical anti-theist says:

Hey —its the dictionary meaning of the words.

……….I know: the truth has a liberal bias and knowing what one is talking about is elitism.

What a circle jerk of Dopes these religious posts bring out. More evident than the political posts although the intellectual power brought to the various issues must be the same.

Interesting. That will change when its understood by the majority as plainly as the Earth is over 6000 years old that the Rich don’t provide jobs. Until then, the idiocy of the Right on Political Issues will retain the default value of false equivalency.

Can’t identify the ball much less juggle two of them at once.

          Disheartening.

      • MikeN says:

Progressive/Liberal seeking to arrest bobbo for refusing to rent to druggies. Obama Admin is currently at the Supreme Court arguing just that.
They already settled a case with St Paul to avoid losing. They are now preparing to settle another case right before going to court. But give them one more vote on that court, and Bobbo is a criminal.

  9. So What? says:

Interesting article. Does the author have an agenda, probably. Does it make the argument invalid, not really.

  10. Supreme Ultrahuman (I see the comment system is still designed for retards.) says:

You forgot the other religion: the one that thinks it’s OK to ask Americans to give up 4x4s and big houses and generally lower their standard of living to save poor Mother Earth. That religion is definitely wrong and its Pope, Algore should be in prison.

Religious or Atheist – it’s all trivial and secondary if Americans don’t get to live large and in charge.

  11. t0llyb0ng says:

evolution is a trick by satin

    [from an actual web page]

  12. Tim says:

“No, dad. A wide stance in the men’s room at the truckstop is not how you get a baby to verify the child support.”

  13. Captain Obvious says:

I’m always amazed that people would happily substitute the tyranny of a state for the tyranny of a religion. Or vice versa.

    • bobbo, the pragmatic existential evangelical anti-theist says:

I’ll bet the nature of the “tyranny” you try to force on your gentle readers is so utterly different in the two cases as to render any equivalency rather meaningless?

  14. Captain Obvious says:

Yoda says “Cages of pedro and MikeN, easy to rattle. Yes.”

  15. MikeN says:

One thing that actual conservative Christian got wrong was when church leaders supported liberation theology and Marxism. I’m not sure how much this was supported by conservative Christians overall though. Nowadays, they also get wrong illegal immigration and global warming.

  16. Murphy says:

The only group more annoying to me than vocal Christians are their atheist counterpart.

    • bobbo, the pragmatic existential evangelical anti-theist says:

Why is that? No vocal Christers = no vocal Anti’s.

……….but………no vocal Antis for centuries while the Christers got louder and louder.

You appear to not understand cause and effect.

      Probably,…. a good thumper.

      • Michael says:

Face it, you guys are just annoying. I’d add vocal gays to the list.

        • bobbo, the pragmatic existential evangelical anti-theist says:

I’ll list you as a proud Republican: “You got yours, everyone one can just go F*@k themselves.”

          Is that about it?

Status quo just fine by you??

I agree. When ever I hear anyone being vocal, I simply count the ways my life has been relatively blessed.

          All a matter of perspective.

  17. MikeN says:

Note to Conservative Christians, watch out for scammers who are building fake ObamaCare sites to steal your info. Best way to tell them apart, according to the Wall Street Journal:

If the site is working, it does not belong to the federal government.

  18. Greg Allen says:

I’m glad the author mentions Christians “of a conservative stripe.”

On most of these issues, there were Christians who got the issue right. Often, liberal Christians were at the forefront of progress — famously fighting against slavery and for civil rights and feminism.

Where I think the author gets it wrong is to frame these issues as strictly religious. Slavery, for example, was primarily driven by capitalism, not religion.

The conflict is more accurately defined as liberal vs. conservative rather than religious vs. secular.

  19. MikeN says:

What conservative Christians got right is that the war on homeschooling signaled a broader war on Christians by liberals, and that it was good for Christians to organize and enter politics.

    • Dallas says:

I can tell you were home schooled. Sorry about that.

    • Captain Obvious says:

The majority of people who home school in the US do it for other reasons than religion. In fact the majority who home school are what you’d call liberals.

      • Tim says:

You form and present your ideas well. That is why it is sad for me to emphatically declare that you are a shill/troll or at the very least, completely clueless to the majority non-political\non-party affiliation of the home-schooled. But, that observation may only be because I, and everything I advocate, exposes that I’m a terrorist and that really, really pisses me off — Is your refrigerator running?? Well, you best go check.

  20. Billy Bob says:

Uncle Dave would like you all to know that he does not like Christians.

    • Uncle Dave says:

Wrong. I like Christians. I don’t like Christianity, or any religion, because of what they are: leftover political structures designed to control people using a pre-scientific era belief in the unprovable existance of a god or gods as the control mechanism. I became an atheist as a teenager after feeling something was wrong with the Lutherin teachings I had, so I started studying science, religion, history, the history of religion (very eye opening as you discover that so much is not what the average believer’s limited indoctrination provides such as why things in the Bible occurred and context), psychology, sociology, archeology, and so on. and as time has gone on and more is discovered in all areas, it has become more clear than ever that I was right.

Liked the recent story where Costco put their Bibles for sale in the “Fiction” section of the Books !!!
