John, I enjoy reading your tech articles on PCmag. However, I think you’re missing an important point in your Microsoft articles.

Microsoft has to change it’s apps every 2 years in order to generate sales. Ask yourself, why would you buy a new version of windows or office if it was largely the same thing? You wouldn’t. So every few years they have to change something superficial, and call it “new and improved”. They don’t care if it destroys productivity or makes no sense. It generates revenue FOR THEM. Or so they hope. Customers are just cows to be milked.

It is very hard for them to make significant improvements in windows. The code is so complex, even the experienced engineers only understand a small portion. So they tinker with the GUI — like slapping a coat of paint on a dilapidated house. It fools a lot of people and forces upgrades.

Smarter people stick with older versions that work for as long as they can.
