I did a Google search to find out what this “Bing” deal is and apparently it is a search app you can get for the iPhone that has 45 ratings averaging 2 stars.

I don’t know if it is free, but it is good to see new search engines try to get some of the app market. The more apps the better.

It is back up again, at least I can reach it here in Canada. I do not use Bing because I believe that Microsoft has enough presence in the world as it is. But at the same time I am also concerened about the power that Google has. Yes I use Linux, and only Linux.

startpage.com – solves all my main gripes with Google (some of which are shared by Bing) and yet uses firewalled Google engine for good old style results that beat all other search choices.
Google/Bing gripes: tracking and data collection, Startpage doesn’t.
Google gripes: they are bent on “personalized” search. Which, for most of my needs fails miserably. General search terms return nonsense because of it. Get service like Startpage that obstructs Google from this personalization and localization and voila – suddenly old pre-2011 Google quality results re-appear.

  Block google with noscript and there are a couple adblock entries to add. It stops all the google profiling garbage. No more drop down suggestions, no previews, no fanagling what pages *they* think you can afford.
  
  IxQuick and Startpage and Startpage are great but give slightly different spreads of results even amongst themselves , sometimes, and don’t seem to be quite ‘up to the minute’ — But, then again, using google like twitter probably means I’ve got undeclared identifier issues somewhere.

    I find dusa’s findings regarding google correct, especially on smart devices. Plus the other search engine is a great choice. Why do you knock his suggestion of an alternative?

      Because google personal tracking to give better results works for me. I do assume my experiences in life are much the same as everyone elses. Dusanmal is a FERP. His credibility on political issues is zero. Why should I extend him the benefit of a doubt on other even tech issues?

      Also have you checked out the film I recommended? I enjoyed it very much, anything Werner Herzog works on I find interesting.

I use only Linux too. I have used bing over google frequently because google refuses some page results unless I login with my google account. Really not much gain though because of who they are but on the plus side if they can’t be leaders they are not who you look to for info.

Personally things get much better with ixquick

bing is hard to avoid it being secreted in lots of “free” apps. I checked and its in my search side bar as an option. 2-3 times a year I’ll try some other engine but keep google as my default. They have tracked me long enough to give me the results I want.

  I seem to remember Obama saying something to the effect that he(they) were installing a switch just encase they needed it to stop an emergency terrorist act , so these improbable outages could be just a test of the emergency broadband system. I’ve been trying really hard to use DuckDuckGo since they claim to preserve your privacy but I find it lacking at times and end up using Google again.

I’m hoping DuckDuckGo gets better where I can ditch Google altogether.

Bing maps are better. The birds eye view is far superior. Hate the new Google maps Also the video search has a mouse over preview (but i don’t search many videos).

I originally avoided Bing because it was Microsoft and I deal with their slap shod products enough as it is.

But, I did actually try to use it a few times to search for things. All I got was links to pages about other searches for something like what I was looking for, but not actually the thing I was looking for.

So, I gave up and went back to Google, but now that Google seems to have renounced its “do no harm” mantra, I’m moving on from there, too.

Each of these brief outages is a telltale clue that yet another upstream photon-hijacking device has been switched over to the new Utah datacenter. Now they won’t need the three-day “rolling buffer” technique. That was the old technology. NSA update indeed. Who’s gonna stop ’em? *cue crickets*

The web-analytics firm GoSquared is reporting that during the roughly 4 minute Google outage, https://engineering.gosquared.com/googles-downtime-40-drop-in-traffic ,
there was a 40% drop in Internet traffic. Other sources state that means a loss of approximately $500,000 in lost ad revenue.
