I’ve always known that the problem with ubiquitous surveillance would be its unequal access.
Politicians, other 1%ers and their minions amongst the 99%ers always feel that they and only they should have access to the data.
That is what being “Big Brother” is all about; they know shit and keep you ignorant, and potentially under arrest.
Having some secret laws which can’t even be put on the books is worse than having no law at all.
If the fruits of this ubiquitous surveillance, the mined data, meta or not, was made universally accessible in real-time to all, just by Googling it, it would be truly earth shaking and civilization altering.
The level of criminality, typically the planned kind as opposed to the opportunistic violent kind , would rapidly drop because people would realize that they couldn’t hope to get away with it and be forced to find some other legal way to provide value for money exchanged.
That said, O’Mama has been a real success story.
He is living proof that a middle-aged black (okay, coffee colored,) man can be as big a fuck up as the old white bigots we’ve had in the Oval office previously.
The more I think on it, the more I’m convinced that my system of making lists of eligible people and just picking names at random to select the people to represent us would lead to a true democracy.

I’d make good on the openness part of his campaign promisses.

Being more open is a reasonable point. However, I would think it’s easier said than done. Disclosing the details of government operations is probably similar to disclosing the details of business operations – a double edged sword or a losing proposition.
I don’t think it’s reasonable for all to have our hands on the drone kill switch. When the urgent time comes time to pull the switch, some may be out shopping or on vacation. Time is of the essence.
When your ambassador is missing and CIA station is under attack, don’t issue a stand down order. Instead send in forces to help. Also don’t go to a fundraiser. And don’t lie about the reasons for the attack, and don’t put a filmmaker in jail to further the lie.
Paint reminders on the ceiling to immediately remove phone from hole after use before reclining back in the Oval Office/oriface and butt-dialing everyone in the world.

Here is the problem with the poster — the government is _not_ monitoring you.

What they are doing is amassing a gigantic “dossier” of raw data on the whole nation and much of the world.
Then, anytime they want, they can assemble a file on you.
And — here’s what’s worse — it’s not the government.
It will be outsourced to black-hole corporations who can say “screw you” to our Constitutional privacy rights.

The ability of the government to track your movements should be a concern for everybody. You may trust the current administration, but these laws won’t disappear with them. They will be there during the next one.
Are you willing to put your liberty at risk if the next administration is hostile to you and yours? They might start tracking you to find out where you visit on a regular basis and sic the IRS on them. It would surely suck, I’m sure, to have all your favorite haunts run out of business by the IRS.
If you want equal treatment, you have to want it for everybody, not just yourself. Otherwise, you are nothing more than a bigot.
You may not be saying these exact words, but the meaning is the same: “If you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to be afraid of.”
Just remember that Crazy Joe Goebbels said the same thing in 1933 when the Nazis went door to door looking for Jews. Then it was the gays. And then the cripples. Eventually, it would have been anyone who didn’t look Aryan.
