Gettysburg Cemetery Dedication — Powerpoint has dominated the world of public speaking for years now. In some situations it’s difficult to give a speech without it. I do a lot of public speaking (all major speakers bureaus — book today!) and having experimented with all sorts of aids, it’s apparent that Powerpoint rules. It’ s almost expected although some old-timers will still stand up at the podium and read a speech word-for-word from a print-out for a full hour. Agh.

So Ben Delaney finds this faux presnetation on the net. It’s the Powerpoints from Lincolns Gettysburg address. While not the funniest thing I’ve ever seen, it opens up a fantastic set of possibilities. Re-engineering in humorous ways classic speeches as Powerpoint presentations could be a hoot. Hopefully a few of you will send some my way for posting.

  1. Alan C says:

Has anyone done one of these for MLK’s “I got a dream” speech?

When I was a kid, we would just suffer in church to plodding, poorly done missionary slide shows.

And the same thing with our neighbor’s vacation videos. (At least those were short!)

But now I’m suffering with these lousy Power Points at work!

Power points are actually WORSE than above because — basically — they are just the speaker’s notes. Who the heck wants to see those?

  2. Mr. Norvig’s Gettysburg PPT certainly started a debate. Given PPT’s hold on the market, I can’t help wonder whether we should be teaching people how to use PPT. But I have more serious concerns with his work.

I have written a formal rejoinder to Mr. Norvig’s Gettysburg PPT. I would be interested in your comments on it.
