Classified footage of an out-of-control drone narrowly missing an Afghan passenger plane carrying 100 people has caused outrage in Germany.
The video, filmed from onboard the unmanned German Luna drone as it flew over Afghanistan, shows it missing the plane by about two metres.
It has caused fury in Germany as debate rages about the Government’s new order of drones. Critics have seized on the dramatic footage taken nine years ago as proof of the dangers of unmanned drones and called for de Maiziere to reconsider.
They say larger drones should be fitted with the technology as it could cause more damage if it crashed.
Since then the footage has gained widespread attention, despite being nine years old.
The 88lb German ‘Luna’ drone was caught in air turbulence created by the Ariana passenger plane, before losing control and crash landing near the Afghan capital, Kabul.
The video shows the plane in the distance before it swiftly moves into shot.
The drone passes under the left wing of the engine.

Germany’s drones, made in japan by banzai aerospace….
I assume the drone was NOT out of control, but IN CONTROL of the remote pilot miles away. No different than any other a/c control issue. Plane avoidance software with automatic override for the drone could be easily installed.
But drone/civilian collision? Its gonna happen.

I choose not to get droned, but it gets ignored by everybody with a drone.
I’m just waiting for one of those things to bring down a big Airbus or Boeing airliner and send it crashing into a nuclear power plant, cracking the core wide open and spewing radiation all over. (I liked disaster movies as a kid. Now we can have it for reals. :-))
In a recent poll, 8 out 10 people said they’d prefer not to get droned. They also preferred the great taste of beer over coke.
The Captain misses this one MPod but I think different people with different goals and requirements are making different smart choices from one another.
We civilians on the ground and in the air don’t want to be droned.
Military folks on the ground and in combat want overhead support.
With enough RULES AND REGULATIONS… both groups should be and can be reasonably served.
Its called: weighing and balancing the multiple needs and challenges of a complex world. …. and not focusing on one issue as if no other issues existed. The very difference between being a Dumbo and a Puke.

Some crazy person’s privately built quad-copter drone, controlled by a Raspberry Pi and some cheap hobbyist grade model airplane parts, gets blamed for taking out a major airliner which crashes into a school full of kids. The government over reacts by attempting to restrict sales and use of model airplane parts, certain radio frequencies and computers! After all, no one really needs more than ONE computer. And there is absolutely no need whatsoever for anyone to have radio controlled model airplane parts. But thanks to crazy ass groups like the EFF, Congress is unable to pass any of the proposed restrictions.

Ya well, sniff it out and follow the money trail. Anyone with a brain can now make a very cool drone that flies autonomously along 200 GPS way points, sends back pictures in real time, returns to base and lands automatically, and whatever they think it might be cool to do. What do they spend, $5,000 or so? Do ya think it looks stupid for taxpayers to be paying 100 times as much for CIA Joe to play with a drone?
