They reflect and concentrate sunlight on salt (in steel pipes) until it melts (801°celcius/1,474° Fahrenheit) and use the molten salt to boil water to drive a turbine and generate electricity.
The salt can cool all night long boiling water for the turbine.
Its a fairly efficient process.
You misunderstood the question. It was not a knock on solar power, but rather the subsidies. Some criminal enterprises in Europe produced power at night to get the subsidies.
