PCWorld.com – Microsoft Fixes ‘Critical’ XP Firewall Issue — At least there were no security problems…guh!

Microsoft has quietly released an update to Windows XP to fix a potentially serious configuration problem in the firewall that ships as part of Windows XP Service Pack 2.

Users who installed SP2 on their Windows XP machines and also have file and printer sharing enabled may have been sharing their files and printers with the entire Internet, according to Microsoft.

If it’s not one thing, then it’s another. Windows XP is the Inspector Clouseau of operating systems when it comes to security.

    Does this really surprise anyone…

Does this also fix the problem where SP2 makes your computer endlessly restart? I downloaded it on my computer at work. I discussed the problem with my own personal technology services consultant (my husband — others pay him but I get it for free. Oh….that sounds dirty, doesn’t it?) and he told me I should never have downloaded SP2. Well, I finally got it into safe mode so I could go back to the last working restoration point.

    Urgh.

Bill Gates — what a guy.

I wonder what CP/M might have evolved into had a certain fellow not been out flying his plane when IBM came a-calling that fateful day and then went down the street and talked to that Gates guy.
