A college degree doesn’t guarantee anything, even that a half-way decent commenting system is used on this site.
You are so right about the commenting system.
The best system, a hierarchal threading system with subject, author and date shown only, and indented according to subject and response, allows people to at a glance, assess a thread; with the most important feature of who is responding to whom being perfectly obvious. Then click on the subject line to expose the author’s content.
The current system forces you to waste time scrolling down thru the usual suspects posts and you can’t easily identify who they are responding to anyway forcing time to be wasted.

I went to college, but I couldn’t find a parking space so I went home.
But seriously folks, one of my best friends has been a bartender most of his life and makes about 20K more a year than I do. Most of it in tips, which of course is not (easily) taxable.
McCullough , Spokane Community Colleges gives students a bumper sticker that says “If you see my Professor, tell them I’m looking for a parking spot.”
Apropos of nothing, I was late for class one day. As at most colleges, parking spaces were coded by color. Students were supposed to park in areas with white curbs only. (green for staff, red for faculty, and so on.) I drove around for 10 minutes looks for a white space with no luck… then I spotted a blue space. I had never noticed a blue space before, had never seen them mentioned or posted on any of the signs that explained the code.
So I parked there.
I learned that day what a blue space was: reserved for the college president. I got a $200.00 ticket, which I refused to pay.
Until I graduated.
Then it turned out that they hadn’t forgotten about that ticket after all, and that I owed for that ticket and a couple of library fines before they would grant my degree. Thank you, sir! Next???
Peter should walk through goldman saks or apple, Microsoft, Congress, Exxon HQ or Walmart corporate offices and ask the same question.
Just because these kids choose the Bourbon Street lifestyle does not mean jobs in their field of study are not available.

Gwad you beat me to it earlier. Alfie owns/runs a cab company. It’s really interesting when you do a google search knowing his back story. I find the name that he chose for the company unsurprising and unoriginal. I do find it intriguing that he chose where he did to base it given his enormous hated of regulations.

Those not bullshitting either got useless degrees or their GPAs were for crap. If you have a degree in math, science or anything useful and your GPA reflected you as a good fit then you are working right now. (For the most part, I realize there are exceptions, however few). And since WHEN did working in a strip club become abad thing?
The hours suck and you’re not allowed to date the women, or even socialize with them. That goes for every male employee except the boss.

I dont know what clubs youve worked at… But all the ones I worked at in my 10 years as a DJ, there were very few rules like that in place. AND, the ones that HAD those rules werent enforcing them. I got to date and socialize quite a few in my time…
Anybody can go to college and decide to work in bars and strip clubs the rest of their lives …. yeah, they’re called “lowlifes”. Not news.
I think for many people that age even a menial job in a party atmosphere like Bourbon Street can seem more attractive than spending all day in an office. However, I’m sure it gets old fast.
Okay, young people like to party. The party crowd rarely actually gets a degree and a lot of those people had degrees. They had invested a huge amount of time and effort in getting a degree and now they had a job that didn’t require the degree and a huge debt load they can’t reasonably be expected to pay back. I also doubt that peddling a rickshaw or waving a sign pays more than minimum wage. Some of them may have been working for tips.

It has never been “the purpose” of college to get you a job. Rather, it is to EDUCATE you. Different ways to phrase that, different emphasis here and there. Some degrees naturally point you to a certain activity but just as easily also provide one with a base to do many different things.
The highest paid job I ever did was the result of a qualifying background and work history and then a most interesting 4 hour interview/test with an industrial psychologist. Imagine that the employer did not trust the college degree and resume?
Hmmmmm….. come to think of it, I was also tested pretty much like that to get into the military.
From each person interviewed, it actually would be interesting to find out a bit more? WHY did you go to college, what did you want out of it. How you doin’? What would you rather be doing and so forth.
There are a million stories in the city.
And the prospects for new collect graduates looks even worse for the next few years.
For those of you who didn’t go to college there are really only two kinds of under graduate degrees: Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science. There are also 2-year degrees called Associate degrees too. But after you earn a bachelor degree you might be able to go on to graduate school and earn a masters degree or even a doctorate (not necessarily in medicine). But it’s still either in arts or science – period!
So when I watched that video all I could think of was how many IDIOT arts majors there were. I think I counted like TWO actual science majors who said they had degrees. Ya, right! But where did they get their degree? Jack’s College of Jerk Offs?
Everyone else was an arts major where even a few said they graduated from some impressive schools too. But they’re still IDIOTS! (FYI: Business, Education, Journalism and even Law, just to name a few, are still ARTS majors.)

Watch the video. A subsidized College education is a method for the Colleges to make more money off the public, hire more admin types, and provide more perks to the admin people leaving the students with a bleep load of debt and all to often a degree that nobody cares about.
People are smart, if the Government wants to give away money they will find a way to scam the system and give you nothing for it.

yeah you gotta decide if you are going to school just to learn something for the fun of it or learn a professional that can earn you some money after graduation. I went back to school for network/system administration because I know that computer professional jobs are going to be in demand just like plumbers. Think about it, doesn’t matter if you are a ditch digger or a Doctor of Physics…….EVERYONE needs a plumber at some point in their life. Computers (big and small) are starting to outnumber toilets in the household and just like plumbing issues almost everyone has called for a tech at some point in their life. If you can manage it I recommend going back to school for a second or even third degree in a high demand field like IT or medical. Good luck!
I thought that was a safe career choice and maybe parts of it still are but Apple often leads the trends and the trend is sealed systems. Something breaks under warrentee and they replace the system. If it isn’t under warrentee you replace the system. With closed systems you don’t need much of a repairman and could end up easily outsourcing it.
Nearly every program my school used before I retired was in the cloud and they all could have been. They handled backups. We could have paid somebody like Google to keep copies of all the school email. Our web sites would have been much better if we hadn’t done our own. The way I see it in ten years a school system and maybe a lot of businesses aren’t going to need much of IT department.
We would have jobs in this country if we all weren’t so stupid.
Interesting but meaningless. I have doubts you would fine many people without a college degree making over 500k a year…
All the US billionaires I know of, are all ungraduated.
You need to look for facts instead of just believing what is fed to you.
The Forbes 400 is a list of the 400 wealthiest people in the states.
Out of 400 only 27 have a high school education or less. 36 are college dropouts.
The rest have college degrees and 161 went on to grad school.
Steve Jobs was a college dropout but if you read his biography you’ll discover that he learned things a Reed College that helped make the Macintosh a success. He education may have influenced the very type that you see displayed on this page.

Judging by this video, going to college will get you a job. Just not in your chosen field.
A college degree only gives you a wider variety of choices for what you are going to do. It does not dictate those choices. My Brother in law chooses to be a bum for the most part. I choose to keep a steady job in the tech industry. Education doesn’t guarantee success, drive does.

My friend’s granddaughter got a psychic degree and got a job working for the state: human services. Her bum of husband wouldn’t work. She had health issues and got sick of him and finally kicked him out. He immediately got a job back he had quite for about 20K a month picked up a new girl friend, picked up a new job with her father for about 10K a month and moved to her home town. Obviously he had options.
Very few of use have anything near those options.
If you have the wrong degree it most likely adds nothing to your chances of getting a better job. If having a lot of very advanced training and an IQ of 160 or above really are requirements to do your job most people aren’t going to get it and couldn’t do it if they did me included.
