Whew! Glad that was cleared up. If you survived a nuclear holocaust, what would be your pleasure at the Mad Max Bar and Thunderdome?

Is bottled beer nuclear bombproof? The United States government conducted a couple tests in the 1950s to find out—it exploded nuclear bombs with “packaged commercial beverages” deposited at varying distances from the blast center to see if beer and soda would be safe to drink afterwards. The finding? Yep, surviving bottled and canned drinks can be consumed the event of a nuclear holocaust, without major health risks.

  1. So, boys and girls, the next time we have a “duck and cover” drill to keep you alert for a possible nuclear attack by the Russians, there’s no need to waste precious seconds shielding your beer from radiation. Even if the attack is real, the agonizing few hours of life remaining will still be worth living because THIS BUD’S FOR YOU!

    “Dammit, this beer is warm!”

    • NobodySpecial says:

I don’t think even an atomic blast can render Bud drinkable.
It might be able to create Godzilla but there are limits!

      • msbpodcast says:

When I think of “Chimay” and other great Belgian abbey beers, I shudder at the thought that after a nuclear conflagration the only left to drink will be “American Piss Water” aka Budweiser.

I wanna throw open the shelter doors and let the blast take me…

  2. ECA says:

    tHINK OF IT THIS WAY..
BOMB has small amount of material to GO BOOM..
    NUKE PLANT has tons..
Its the TIME that the item is AROUND the nuke material that hurts it.

A Bomb leaves MOSt of its affects during the blast..If there is an affect its in the materials Left over from the blast..including DIRT.

From a nuke plant, the materials could affect anything that will absorb the Radioactive material, while its sitting around..

  3. bobbo, one Real Liberal making Obama a Conservative by comparison says:

I’m with Gary. so we have beer, now how do we get it cold?

  4. Bill me later! says:

    It’s only radiation.

A nuclear reaction/explosion produces just a bit more radiation than you might get from a campfire. Just a bit! So I have no problem with liquids such as beer getting warmed up a little – it definitely kills any germs (or animals). And it’s not like there won’t be a nuclear winter to cool things back down.

Of course, I wouldn’t want to pick up a lit campfire log to hold my beer. By the same logic I also wouldn’t want to try and bury any radioactive material near any populated areas either. But apparently, nuclear energy is so “clean” that some people (perhaps people with ostrich genes) actually believe that once anything is buried that it no longer poses any more problems. They also seem to think that pure shit is good to clean with too!

Therefore, radiation is relatively harmless. You just have to learn to keep a certain distance away. With fire, you have your skin to tell when it’s too hot. And with nuclear materials there are Geiger counters. So now we can use either type of energy to pasteurize and clean our beer. Isn’t that great?

So let’s all have a “toast” to the end of the world. Because once places like Iran get nuclear capabilities there will be plenty of atom bombs and radiation for everyone to serve up nice clean beers. Assuming, of course, there’s anyone left to drink them.

    • Bill me later! says:

… And rather than ask our foolish leaders (like as Ms. Hillary “that’s not my cigar” Clinton) just what they are doing about nuclear development in immature countries like Iran – especially since we all seem perfectly content with our own nuclear policies (HELLO?!) – let’s focus on other crap like Barack “Oh Bummer versus Mitt “Ridiculous” or who screwed who in Hollywood/Washington. Or! How to correctly warm up a beer. After all, that stuff is more important.

(Before you feel a need to reply, try looking up the word sarcasm.)

    • B. Dog says:

Yeah, have a beer. Vote for the gay with a genuine Nobel Peace Prize. Watch a video, have a nice day:

    • msbpodcast says:

Uh A nuclear reaction/explosion produces just a bit more radiation than you might get from a campfire

How many mili-Sieverts is that exactly, and why is why your hair falling out in clumps like that? (Eww Your gums are bleeding.)

You’re right, only if you happen to be the kindling…

  5. Uninterested says:

Must be a slow news day. So far the topics have been titties and beer.

Or are you, Uncle Dave just pandering to the audience?

  6. Gildersleeve says:

Of course those tests probably didn’t stress the importance of using BROWN bottled beers. Can you imagine emerging from Ye Olde Shelter and cracking open the skunkbrew of a Hineykinn? Horrors!

    • msbpodcast says:

When I lived on Ottawa, CA, I used to drink Sleeman’s Ale which came in clear glass bottles, (lots of clear glass bottles. :-))

I never had a bad one, though I did need some aspirin sometimes when I came to…

  7. jbenson2 says:

With the melt-down of the current administration, Obama’s fan-boy Uncle Dave, has avoided any discussion of his Messiah’s fall from grace. I wonder if he will ignore the results on November 6.

    • bobbo, one Real Liberal making Obama a Conservative by comparison says:

I missed it… what melt down? You mean the increasing lead he has in the toss up states?

ehhh==partisan BS is just that. Even worse when only expressions that fit on a bumper sticker can be exchanged.

      Mitt Rmoney: Dufus.

      • jbenson2 says:

After seeing the national polls, the meltdown in the administration’s state department’s lies about a movie and not the real reason, unemployment, regulations that only serve to keep government unions in office, etc. etc., here is an appropriate video for Bobbo to watch on November 6:

        • bobbo, one Real Liberal making Obama a Conservative by comparison says:

Well thanks JB. Your link sidebar has many such videos. I didn’t know it was a “thing” to listen to crap so endlessly. A meltdown of our culture if you will?

I stated the riot was a pretext right off the bat. The first reports that it was caused by the video were to me just early lazy reporting/off the cuff response.

I agree the State Department (Obama yes, but I Blame Hilary==she’s doing such a great job don’t you know? Ducking bullets and all) made a stupid short sighted public relations goof… but I don’t see any meltdown.

What inappropriate regulations keep unions in office? Can you feebly look at your talking points to see if it has any detail?

          Silly.

  8. NewformatSux says:

Pres Obama will simply deny the nuclear attack took place. Florida has been denied emergency funding for Hurricane Isaac. They must think that state is gone.

  9. seetheblacksun says:

    See, there is a god.

  10. jpfitz says:

I’ll have a few Unibroue Don-De-Dieu, or a couple Lagunitas IPA.
If your going to be radiated to death drink something worthwhile.

  11. hpbear149 says:

ok. question here that may warrant new testing. weren’t all the bottles back then glass? and usually with some metallic impurities, like say iron, lead or something like that? and would these results hold up with today’s mainly plastic bottles and/or clear and pure glass bottles with no metallic impurities?

  12. Glenn E. says:

Pretty hard to harm beverage molecules. The carbs in them might get a bit split up by the gamma. I don’t know what that does to the taste. Might make Nutrasweet worse. But as long as they’re unopened, no particle radiation is going to get into them, and linger. It might get a bit warm, if it’s close to ground zero. Just don’t drink from burst bottles and cans. And clean the nuke dust off the lids and necks, so you don’t get lip cancer. Probably saver than drinking from any open rivers or streams, for a week or two.

The real question might be why you’re that hard up for a drink, out in the middle of a blast zone. BTW, if they nuke the vineyards, don’t drink that years wine. 🙂

  13. NewformatSux says:

Whereas today Obama’s EPA will test on human subjects to advance a political goal.
