The squares weren’t the only thing when they released this last month. Check out that stylish font! How imaginative and magical it all seems!

    Seeing the video helps.

The idea is that the plain looking squares can be transformed into a bunch of different logos/products.

It’s a little static in it’s base form but my guess is that this is very deliberate We won’t see it that way as often as we see it implement in its other incarnations. More importantly, we’ll see lots of animation where the base logo morphs into a product logo.

Some people will immediately mock the new logo but, Ill give it a “time will tell” rating. I think it will work nicely for them.

    “Click pic to embiggen”

    Is that a joke?

  3. dusanmal says:

Novel idea in sync with “Metro” (or whatever it is called now) style of abstraction vs. dominant thread of 3D-ing interfaces, logos, … Though I wish them well (not everyone dares this much these days), I think that they failed in research of what feels good to the user. Our brains expect 3D, naturally. So, the question is “will the flatness survive Win8 and for how much longer”. My guess is not much longer. At the same time I hope they grow something better out of this whole “new thing” flat logo symbolizes, it has potential, just not at this stage.

  4. deowll says:

The logo they had may have been an optimal design which means improvements aren’t.

Win 8 is not going to be all that hot for desktops. It may offer something for laptops but they need a touch screen which is going to add a lot to the costs. Bottom line is that it is a tablet OS. With a 30 inch monitor and a nice sound system I haven’t fallen in love with sub 10 inch screens with crappy sound systems.

  5. orchidcup says:

I don’t know why Microsoft didn’t make Windows 8 for touch screens and leave Windows 7 alone for everything else.

Most IT people in large organizations are not going to migrate up to version 8 with all the training and orientation and associated costs.

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

  6. The0ne says:

hahaha, I like what you did 😀 Made my entire day!

    Orchidcup:

I think MS is prematurely releasing Win8 as 3rd party drivers are not readily available. Think release of Vista. MS also knows that Win7 is too good to be dethrone by Win8 anytime soon. Win7 will most likely become like WinXP, to be use for ages to come.

So why did they release Win8 then? I have no idea. It’s easy enough to switch to desktop and Metro so I have no issues. But drivers, lack of LCD touch screens, apps and really innovation and you’re left with “how” to tinker with it.

The LCD’s are coming, the apps are coming and MS is trying (not hard enough imo) to get people to develop for it (metro UI). You can view this like I do where it’s a stepping stone for companies to innovate with. You have the software capability (development tool i.e.) so now what?

That is why even though I like Win8 I wouldn’t advice anyone I know to use it daily. It’s on dual boot for me just to play with.

  7. Somebody_Else says:

The Vista/7 flag logo on the blue sphere looked better, IMO.

Windows 8 is a disaster, and this is coming from someone who adamantly defended Vista. Whoever thought it was ok to force a phone/tablet interface on desktop users needs to be kicked in the head repeatedly.

  8. kmfix says:

I wonder if they can even successfully defend that as a trademark. 4 colored squares. I bet someone has tile that looks just like that.

  9. msbpodcast says:

Its the Piet Mondrian motif that Microsoft is adopting as a corporate identity for Windows on all their devices.

They focused on his artistic period from the 1930s and that seems to have inspired the folks at Apple* to craft and brand all of the Microsoft products when they developed the Metro interface for the Windows 8 phone.

You’ll be looking at those matte, flat color panels for at least a decade or longer.

*) Yes. You read right… The folks at Apple. They had to prove that it wasn’t necessary to rip off the Apple look and feel to have a smart phone. The easiest way to win a billion+ bucks in the lawsuits with Samsung was to build another interface, Metro, and then Samsung wouldn’t be able to claim it was the way it looked on the iPhone and iPad was the only possible way to design phone interfaces…

  10. JimD, Boston, MA says:

Looks like M$ is GOING FLAT !!! Like their stock price and earnings ?

  11. CrankyGeeksFan says:

This and one of Google’s logos remind me of Simon, the electronic toy from the 1970s.

  12. AdmFubar says:

ahh the new look now more closely matches the whole windows experience, flattened out, locked down, less freedom… all that is missing are the iron bars over the them to help keep you locked in…

  13. Rickem says:

So, they have money to spend on logo R&D. Extra cash just laying around. Have to spend it somewhere.
