X-ray cameras ‘see through clothes’ | UK Latest | Guardian Unlimited

The Government is considering installing X-ray cameras on lampposts to spot armed terrorists and other criminals. According to a leaked memo seen by The Sun, “detection of weapons and explosives will become easier” if the scheme drawn up by Home Office officials is adopted.

However, officials acknowledged that it would be highly controversial as the cameras can “see” through clothing. “The social acceptability of routine intrusive detection measures and the operational response required in the event of an alarm are likely to be limiting factors,” the memo warned.

“Privacy is an issue because the machines see through clothing.”

any chance of us getting on of our own? you know, to use as a security camera at home. (wink, wink)

  6. Tom says:

It likely uses either backscatter xray or IR. The former produces less xray exposure than you get from normally occuring sources and the former uses none. At least health risk is not a concern here.

Remember, remember the Fifth of November…

More and more disturbing police-state news seems to be coming from our friendly neighbors across the pond lately. Stop giving the U.S. government ideas!

I want the job monitoring the cameras outside the Sun’s “Page 3” studio.

  9. TheGlobalWarmer says:

We should just move on to quick remove robes because we have to submit to fully nude, pat-down/body cavity searches at security checkpoint.

You know what’ll happen. This stuff will not just be at airports, but courthouses and other public buildings. Then you’ll get perverts who go in and out of the buildings all day just because they get off knowing someone else is seeing them nekkid.

  10. raddad says:

So, I presume this technology doesn’t work on minors?

  12. tallwookie says:

#12 – I wonder if we can protect the children (from them being scanned and shown to be nekkid, thus involving them in child pornography) & at the same time protect the children from those evil terrorists… well… 1 out of 2 isnt bad…

  13. There is a new documentary about video surveillance (CCTV) in Britain coming out, and this time, the topic seems to be covered in a more critical way. There’s a trailer online:
