There are times when you just shake you head in wonder at how stupid we must look to the world when they see people like this who think something you’re born with (like skin color, height, etc) can be changed.

State lawmakers have approved a bill that would establish a first-of-its-kind ban on a controversial form of psychotherapy aimed at making gay teenagers straight.
[…]
Supporters say SB1172 is needed because sexual conversion treatments are dangerous and can cause teens to commit suicide. Conservative religious groups and some Republicans argue that banning conversion therapy would hinder parents’ right to provide psychological care for their children. Mainstream mental health organizations have disavowed such therapy, but it is still practiced in California.

Democratic Senator Ted Lieu, of Torrance, who wrote the bill, says sexual orientation therapy amounts to “psychological abuse of children.”

  1. NewformatSux says:

So when are they going to ban sex change operations?

  2. NobodySpecial says:

    Depends on the treatment .
I think I might be gay, but it could be cured with; the Dallas cowboy cheerleaders, a hot-tub and about 20 gallons of chocolate sauce.

    • Dallas says:

The chocolate part seems gross and unnecessary.

BTW, don’t watch college football or you will go to hell.

  5. B. Dog says:

Now that teasing other kids is illegal, guidance can’t be given the old fashioned way. Of course, I didn’t really think there were really gay people in the adult sense of the word. By the way, who woulda thunk Rock Hudson was gay?

    • The Monster's Lawyer says:

I believe Gomer Pyle thought he was gay.
But i know what yu mean. I almost fainted when I found out Liberace was gay.

      • orchidcup says:

I almost fainted when I found out the evangelist Ted Haggard is gay.

I did faint when I found out Jim Swilley, the pastor of a Georgia megachurch, came out as gay.

      • Dallas says:

I’m pretty sure Jesus was gay. I don’t know about you but washing another guy’s feet is pretty gay.

      • What? says:

        Hahahaha

  6. Guyver says:

This is a non-issue if people collectively moved towards smaller more limited government.

  7. dusanmal says:

@UncleDave “There are times when you just shake you head in wonder at how stupid we must look to the world when they see people like this who think something you’re born with (like skin color, height, etc) can be changed.” … so, do you tell the same to the parents of children born with sickle cell anemia, heart defects of all sorts, cleft lip,… just to name few obvious ones. If your child is born with congenital mental defect that makes it to want to eat excrement and not the food – what than? No treatment because it is congenital despite functional failure?
Fundamental problem is that the medical community failed Science and accepted political correctness in the very definition.
Only after that is said medical community could come and attempt to explain how fundamental and untreatable the issue is and how benign (vs. say above mentioned excrement eating) for good and productive normal life it is.

I still want to know how anyone knows LGBTQ… ad infinitum is “something you’re born with”.

    • orchidcup says:

There are a number of scientific theories regarding sexual orientation and its causes.

Wikipedia has a good overview on the subject.

Whether or not homosexuality is voluntary or something people are born with is immaterial.

People are free to choose whatever lifestyle accommodates their preferences.

Problems arise when religious fanatics insist they have a right to dictate lifestyle choices for other people.

        >Wikipedia has a good overview on the subject.

Until someone replaces it with a comment about the Decepticons.

I still want to know how anyone knows LGBTQ… ad infinitum is “something you’re born with”. /// You know, its interesting when a person of good will can ask such a question. How about this for a start? Look deep within YOURSELF. How was your own sexual orientation arrived at? Can you imagine acting opposite to your orientation? Now—why do you assume anyone else is different from you?

People are mostly the same, with only a few occasional differences. Life is like that.

But science marches on. Its mostly genetic or ALL genetic depending on how you define nature vs nuture. A complex of genes interacting with one another, hormones, environment–one day to be mostly understood and manipulatable by man.

    Anti-Gay = Failure of insight/empathy/freeeeeeeeedom.

    Silly Hoomans.

  10. bobbo, the pragmatic existential evangelical anti-theist says:

I support a law to make bogus sex orientation therapy against the law. It already “should be” under any bogus medical claim law: show us your evidence that your process works.

but people be crazy about sex and orientation so something directly on point does seem warranted.

Is this a social process subject to the always present possibility that its “values” of a majority being oppressively applied against an minority?=====Of Course!!!! Where ya been?

….and so the course of human history is a stumble towards trying to get it right. Majority will—usually better than control by a minority.

    Yea, verily.

  11. orchidcup says:

Let’s hear what a gospel preacher of a Georgia megachurch says about sexual orientation:

Gay suicides spur Pastor Jim Swilley to come out

  12. orchidcup says:

Let’s hear what a gospel preacher says about gay-acting children:

Parents Should ‘Punch’ Gay-Acting Children, Says Pastor Sean Harris

    Punch them!

  13. NewformatSux says:

So have they also banned sex change operations, and cut all funding for cities that subsidize it?

    • bobbo, the pragmatic existential evangelical anti-theist says:

NFS–have you said that 2-3 times now or just adding to the dog pile?

      Sex change operations WORK!!!

Sex orientation reprogramming does NOT WORK!!!

Do you see the difference? Look again where the word “NOT” appears. It changes the meaning of the sentence entirely. With your skill in handling double negatives, a single one should be easy?

  14. msbpodcast says:

How about if we all agree (Ha hahaha ha…never happen…) to keep out noses out of each other’s crotches.

  15. Jason says:

You know what surprises me the most? That Uncle Dave thinks the rest of the world is ATHEIST.

If you were gay in almost any Islamic nation you risk being killed. In India, you are marginalized and thrown into the caste system in a way that is not beneficial to you. Don’t even get me started on what happens to you in most of Africa…

I say be what you wanna be as long as it does not impede my ability to do the same or make ME pay for you being able to do whatever it is you want to do but to sit there and wax poetic that ONLY in ‘merica is there backwards people is not just disingenuous, it flatly paints just how totally stupid and ignorant you are and any that think/act the same way.

Glad I am in Canada. Wanna be gay? Fine. Don’t? Fine too!!! And neither party can interfere with the other!!!

    • bobbo, the pragmatic existential evangelical anti-theist says:

I was gonna slam you there Jason, but I check our Good Uncle Dave’s first sentence and you are right on the mark.

It a forgivable oversight though: thinking that Northern Europe is the rest of the world.

      Hee, hee.

  16. spsffan says:

Ted Lieu is my State Senator. This is about the first worthwhile piece of legislation that he’s put forth.

While one can debate whether trying to change someone’s sexual orientation is ethical or not, the fact that it doesn’t work makes it fraudulent, regardless.

What did the guy from New Jersey say when someone at the Convention commented on all the wind? “Oh, that’s just the governor farting.”

  17. Supreme Ultrahuman (I see the comment system is still designed for retards.) says:

Gay/Straight. Who gives a shit? Does this issue contribute to more Americans living in big houses located at least 20 mi. from their jobs, and driving 4x4s powered buy cheap domestic gas at least 20K miles per year? If not STFU – it’s irrelevant. Fix the important shit first dammit.

    • NobodySpecial says:

Well the group least likely to live in a McMansion in the suburbs with a pickup, barbecue, and 5 children are gays.

  18. Billy Bob says:

I disagree with you, therefore we must pass a law to make your opinion illegal.

  19. Anonymous says:

This is all so pathetically stupid.

If you’re gay then fine. I personally find it repugnant and try to avoid it like a bad smell. But I don’t let my (distasteful) opinion cloud my judgement either. I say we should let homosexuals enjoy the same rights and privileges that everyone else is allowed to enjoy. And as long as there’s any sort of governmental arm recognizing it then I even say homosexual couples should even be allowed to get married too. No “civil unions” either – Marriage!

JUST DON’T ARGUE THAT HOMOSEXUALITY IS SOMEHOW “NORMAL” BECAUSE IT CLEARLY ISN’T! Not having fully functioning body parts is also not normal. But that doesn’t mean we don’t accept ALL PEOPLE into American SOCIETY.

And when you start talking about “cures” for something then I also say, great! But that too is a little too subjective when you take it a step further and start imposing cures or taking involuntary preventative measures. You only do that when an obvious and immediate threat to the health of other individuals is at risk. And even then, we often think twice about it.

But homosexuality is no such threat. Homosexuality is not a condition or illness that can be transmitted or caught. And even if it were it’s not something that will kill anyone. (And don’t go off about AIDS here either. You’re clearly a complete idiot if you actually think that AIDS is the result of homosexuality or some kind of divine condemnation.)

And just like cancer, it’s up to each individual as to whether or not they want “treatment.”

Personally, I find the hatred and ridicule of homosexuals very curious when these condemnations come from religious people who are always reminding us to love our neighbors. Very damned curious. That’s no different than hating someone because they are blind or deaf.

I may agree with the condemnations when it comes to acts of consenting homosexuality but that doesn’t give me – or you – any sort of right to enforce what other people do. In fact, it’s not our decision to force what consenting heterosexual people do either.

So believe what you want. I do. But you better be objective when it comes to the rest of the real world – and humanity. Else you might start another WAR!

    • What? says:

Rational thought is dangerous, and must be banned as is upsets the balance of power. Rule by fear is the best rule.

    • bobbo, the pragmatic existential evangelical anti-theist says:

      Define Normal.

Not to interfere with that exercise, homosexuality is known through out the animal kingdom appearing in different percentages in different species.

Its known in all human societies in all countries and at all times in recorded history.

It increases the fecundity of females.

A normal distribution of almost every characteristic you can name takes a bell shaped curve.

If something is always present, how can it not be normal?

Might you characterize whatever your issue is with some more precise term?

      • Dallas says:

This is why I like you 🙂 Well, sheeple do like to ‘narrow the normal’ as the NIH often jokes. It’s also a short hop to a new medicine to an overmedicated country. From adolescence to adulthood we expect drugs to fix “problems’ we fear.

    • orchidcup says:

I wish everybody could be normal like me.

Unfortunately, I am the only normal person.

    • John says:

There is no such thing as normal. We are all weird and fucked up in our own unique ways. But good on you for saying live and let live!

      • bobbo, we think with words, and flower with ideas says:

Yeah, except he’s not really saying that.

Its like he sets your house on fire and then says he hopes you get out.

  20. sargasso_c says:

Not long ago they were lobotomising the intellectually handicapped. In some places they are sterilising the poor. Putting lithium in the water? Now how about a medical procedure to save the parents from embarrassment at cocktail parties? This is an ethical problem with the medical profession, not a “fix” for a behavioural “problem”.

    • bobbo, the pragmatic existential evangelical anti-theist says:

Not to quibble but I rarely see the chance to do so with you: lobotomies were for psychiatric conditions not including the intellectually handicapped. Still used today for the same conditions…. just not as often as pills achieve the same effect without breaking bones.
