Sony Denies Preventing Adult Content On Blu-Ray – News by InformationWeek — Will someone stand up and give us the facts here? Curiously this apparent disinformation puts HD-DVD promoter Microsoft on the other side making me wonder if this wasn’t orchestrated by Microsoft. Zounds! Shades of the OS/2 wars.

Sony on Tuesday denied claims that it was preventing the porn industry from using the Blu-ray high-definition format developed by the consumer electronics giant.

Media reports have quoted adult-film directors and producers accusing Sony of pressuring others not to manufacture Blu-ray discs with adult content or share technology with the porn industry. The result, according to reports, has been a migration by adult filmmakers toward HD DVD, a competing format.

Sony dismissed the claims saying it has no control over the licensing of Blu-ray, and has no problem with the adult industry using the format. “Theres no prohibition against adult content,” Lisa Gephardt, a spokeswoman for Sony Corp. of America, said. “We dont tell people how they can use the licenses they get from the Blu-ray Disc Association.”

Indeed, the BDA, which handles all licensing for Blu-ray technology, said in a statement that the group is “an open organization that welcomes the participation of all companies interested in using and supporting the format, including those that represent the full spectrum of genres in the content industry.”

So, John, did you pull that screen cap from your own BD collection? 😉

Seriously, I think the whole “Adult films determine the market” theory is wrong. I think they are more of an indicator of the market instead of a leader since they usually take the technology that is the cheapest for making movies. They churn out dozens of movies a month and try to keep the price down as much as they can. If the pr0n industry is using this tech, then so are the major studios. I just don’t think the advertise it as much so as not to ruffle feathers.

    John,

What’s up with that photo? It comes from a University’s server in the Netherlands. Are you saying that girl is a porn star? That seems to be what you’re saying by putting her photo up here with your entry…..

I would probably think twice about doing something like that, unless of course she is a porn star. I once saw a promotional video for some product playing in the lobby of a hotel I was staying at for business. In the video was a shot of an actor friend of mine. Next time I saw him, I mentioned I saw him in the video.

Next thing you know, he contacted a lawyer and the lawyer got him a big fat check. See, the video clip was something my friend had done for a non-profit, for free. The video in the lobby was selling a product. How it got in that video (it looked like stock footage actually) is unknown. But what is known is that my friend was owed money.

Now obviously here the situation is different. But there are libel laws that might apply. It’s clear to me that you are saying this girl is involved in porn. If she isn’t and a friend happens to see this blog, you could be in some serious trouble.

My story simply illustrates that even though it comes off of a server on the other side of the atlantic, the web makes the world a really small place. If I saw a friend in a video in the lobby of a hotel on the other side of the country, what are the chances that someone who knows her might see her photo on your site?

I’d change it if I were you, unless you’re certain she is involved in porn….

You know, for as much as I love porn, there are some things that just shouldn’t be blown up onto a 52″ display in 1080p. Frankly, a lot of the porn “actors” actually look like hell, and porn on Blu-Ray is gonna kill all the fun! Even (non-porn) journalists are worried about the same issue: http://www.dvorak.org/blog/?p=8931

  4. Mac Guy says:

Maybe she works for Sony in .nl. Maybe she watches porn. Maybe she’s reading an email that tells her that her boyfriend watches porn. Maybe her mom is giving her a list of porn she shouldn’t watch.

Without a caption, there’s no endorsement of porn one way or the other. 🙂

Sweet! Now we’ll be able to see the scars where they pushed the breast implants in the chicks!

  6. Mac Guy says:

Now we’ll be able to tell if she waxes or shaves.

  7. Triando says:

I also don’t think that the porn industry will have any bearing on the winner of the next gen disc wars. It may have back in the Beta vs VHS days but that was the only way to get porn into your home. Now with the internet full of porn and the fact that most people wouldn’t want to see porn in HD, I don’t think it will be a factor.

I predict a new wing at ILM specializing in cosmetic special effect cover-up for porn stars razor burn, lumpy boobs, hairy areolas etc.

#3, …Frankly, a lot of the porn “actors” actually look like hell, and porn on Blu-Ray is gonna kill all the fun!

Suggestion, do like my wife and insist I turn off the lights first. Hey, works for her.

  10. You guys are forgetting one important thing:

The stuff you (maybe) don’t want to see won’t show up in the XVID or divx versions of these videos, anyway. Just like now. 🙂 Who the hell pays for porn these days?

    Gentlemen, start your downloads!

  11. Greg Allen says:

Is that picture a screen grab from a porn movie? So, maybe porno is art!

#8 – OhFrak! -“lumpy boobs, hairy areolas”

What the Hell kind of porn are you watching, you sicko! This fetish crap is getting out of hand. O_o

  13. Named says:

    5,

I’m wary about too much juice in the close ups… Especially if it’s of the chunky kind. You know what they say… Yeast is only a women’s friend in the kitchen! Blech!

Secondly, I hate the way fake boobs hang in the doggie style. They have these weird striations that just scream UNNATURAL WEIGHT! Then again, I pretty much hate that fake “beauty”. Tres passe. If you get a chance, look at the playboy centrefolds from 1965 – 1980. Totally different class of women back then.

  14. In Raw World of Sex Movies, High Definition Could Be a View Too Real

“The biggest problem is razor burn,” said Stormy Daniels, an actress, writer and director.

  15. Angel H. Wong says:

#14 Yeah, but that since I’m a fan of gross stuff I would like to see grosser stuff 😉
