Smoking Pot May Lead to Increased Risk of Psychosis

A study conducted by Professor Jim van Os of Maastricht University in the Netherlands indicates that young people who smoke pot once or twice a week, double their risk of developing psychiatric illness such as schizophrenia as they get older.

Personally I think there is a link here to the post below.

  1. Tenaya says:

In other news, a new government study on the credibility of government studies has concluded that government involvement in any given study actually induces outright disbelief in the findings of the study within the group the study targets.

Other than the quest for study grant money, why do they even bother?

  2. Stephen Christopher Heinrich says:

Apparently these young ones didn’t smoke the right stuff or just had too little. (Just kidding, there could also have been older ones.) Could it be that the phsychotic relatives reactions could have something to do with it. Perhaps the pot opened an awareness level that allowed some of lifes more distastefull realities to overwhelm them. If you see the light and wish no more the darkness, is it addiction that keeps you craving light? Lack of resourses and opportunity in and of themselves can cause desparation. Doesn’t the realization of potential consciousness issues for yourself or your children add sufficient stress to induce said issues? Is my nonlinearity making you crazy? …

  3. Dave says:

What a load of oregano! Prof. Jim interviewed 2,437 pre-9/11 young people, age 14-24 and found 10% (243) “at risk” of developing “psychotic symptoms” (meaning a propensity towards paranoia, suspician and delusions). Then, four years later (post 9/11) he reinterviewed this same group and found 15% of those who claimed they did not smoke pot, and 21% of those who admitted using dope, developed “symptoms.” Not only is this statistically insignificant, the criteria used for establishing “psychotic symptoms” can be attributable to many other factors, including world terrorism. Prof. Jim found a convenient but meaningless correlation, and then attempts to sensationalize it as potential causation. Want to play the game, too? Who has more of a propensity towards paranoia, suspician and delusions than post-election blue state democrats? Maybe they’re all pot smokers who should quit!

  4. Thomas says:

Dope smoking leading to paranoia sounds awfully suspicious. Tweakers perhaps, but marijuana? This sounds like bullshit. Further, it seems highly unlikely that the Bush administration has anything to do with this “finding.”
