I must offer a mea culpa to our readers for getting caught by this fish story. I did find the lead on a site I (used to) trust on such things, but that does not excuse my not doing due diligence to verify the item. In light of my error, I would rather eat crow than have you guys think we don’t care about the truth of the items we post here.
Here’s the original story:
Rising seas, caused by global warming, have for the first time washed an inhabited island off the face of the Earth. The obliteration of Lohachara island, in India’s part of the Sundarbans where the Ganges and the Brahmaputra rivers empty into the Bay of Bengal, marks the moment when one of the most apocalyptic predictions of environmentalists and climate scientists has started coming true.
It turns out the islands are sinking for reasons other than global warming.
For the record, I do not believe that recent activity by man is the primary factor behind global warming, although I don’t see a problem with pollution reduction for any reason. My concern is that regardless of cause, there are some who have it in their best interest to deny any changes are taking place.
However, my concerns should not be the only motivation behind posting a story here. I was taken in and wound up presenting bad information as fact. Again, I apologize and promise to be more careful in the future.
With any luck the world runs out of oil and that in turn forces a massive reduction in co2. See the two doomsday scenarios sort of cancel each other out, at least to the point that the world will not become uninhabitable as the warmers say it will.
So if you care about global warming… use more oil, the faster we run out the sooner we stop polluting … simple.

It’s just that Eideard mentioned that the research showed the story was not right, so I started reading up a bit on it….and got some really interesting information. They did mention that global warming **might** have a very small role in whats going on…..and that man(because of heavy water removal from the aquifier by India) even has a part in it. But mostly, it’s tectonic plate movement and cyclic weather variations of the planet. The area that the island was part of has a whole host of natural things going on that makes it unique, and at risk of disappearing.
Any way, it was a good read.

I’ve been thinking this over for a little while now. I don’t think you owe or need apologize for re-evaluating the story. If people want to take it on blind faith then shame on them. If people feel uncomfortable and do a bit of research then great for them.
Posting an update is your call. While apologizing shows much about your character, your dedication to science speaks louder. Thank you for all your topics.
