Troy Smith’s Heisman Trophy was shipped home because airport security would not allow the Ohio State quarterback to take it on the plane Tuesday.
Smith wore a black leather jacket with the Heisman insignia on back when he arrived at the airport from New York, where he was presented college football’s most coveted trophy.
Eddie George, the last Buckeye to win the Heisman in 1995, had his trophy get stuck in an airport X-ray machine, losing the tip of its right index finger and bending the middle finger.
“We decided to have it shipped. That’s much easier. How times have changed. Eddie carried it on the plane and put it in the seat next to him,” sports information director Steve Snapp said.
Smith said he didn’t mind.
“No, because Eddie’s finger got bent,” Smith said. “I don’t want that to happen to mine.”
The whole TSA crowd — should get bent!
Come on, that wasn’t necessarily a stupid decision.
It’s even possible the thing is outside the dimensions allowed for a carry-on item.
Besides, I’m sick and tired of exemptions enjoyed by the rick and famous all the time. Let’s just all suffer thru this together, shall we?
rick and the famous?
Well, he’s not rich yet, but possibly the most famous college student this month. And I could say that he was denied because he’s a freakin’ buckeye, (Go Blue) but IMO he should have been let on the plane with the trophy. Cripes, millions of people saw him win it, probably half the plane knew who he was. Again, common sense denied for zero tolerance rules.
Sometimes rigid rules make for poor policy. Then, when you get an inspector who doesn’t like football, those rigid rules become even sillier.
Was he going to put it under his seat ot in the overhead bin? If not it shouldn’t be on the plane.
This is exactly why we came out with our “F*ck the TSA” line at Offensively Binary.

Stupid stupid TSA…
“Footballer”? He plays (American) football not soccer. In the US, no one calls football players “footballers.”
Would you let O.J. Simpson on a plane with his Heisman? He’s certainly famous enough, and he at least used to be rich.
Next time, take the train!
I wouldn’t let OJ on with a toothpick.
Clearly common sense is not a job requirement of the TSA workers. This is a win for the terrorists, IMO.
Just to be fair (kind of crazy I know since “Dvorak Uncensored” is quickly degenerating into “Dvorak’s Flamebait Heaven”), the articles on this “incident” are very clear nor consistent. I have read several, including some also from the AP, that make no mention of “airport security refusing the trophy”. Most of them imply it was a decision of Troy himself or the Heisman coordinators to have the trophy shipped.
All I want to know is…..how do I recognise those wily *ricks* and avoid them!!!
#10 – you cant beat somone to death with a toothpick – a trophy on the other hand…
