It appears someone took the “House” in Waffle House a little too literally. At the Gordon Highway location, crews were called in after reports that a man was making the roof his home. He was spotted by an air conditioner repairman. Cops and firefighters were called in to help the man down.

James Mayle, when asked if he’d seen anything like, said “No, you never expect anything like this, a person on top of the roof at a Waffle house? No, never that.”

He didn’t have to go far for breakfast.

I posted this once before–I will dare a repeat: once on vacation in Denmark I waited too long and did not have a room for the night. Wound up spending the night underneath a tree. Miserable in the cold and light mist. Same and other vacations: caught on foot with no bus or rail available: miserable day walking.

What I took from those experiences is that a Mega Mansion to a cardboard box and as a Rolls Royce to a bicycle is not as great a difference in human appreciation as a cardboard box to nothing and a bicycle to on foot.

The barest amount of technology/protection is truly and overwhelmingly significant.

If you are not homeless and afoot—you are blessed.

That is all a lead in to when I walk thru Fry’s Electronics and see that train that crashes thru the wall–I think “I could live in that caboose!” but society will guard its resources. No bridge underpass for you–move along. It really does take so little to actually “get by” yet our society makes it unavailable under some punitive Calvinist notion of being a “productive member of society” or some other such nonsense.

Let people have a full range of choices, from cardboard box to Mega Mansions. Lets those making the choice recognize the magnificent benefit of even the very first little step. did I mention food and healthcare and internet access as the full picture?

    Ha, ha.

Almost time to repost my Mexican in a Box story. Memories.

Oh–the point was: “Hell yes I can imagine living on a WaffleHouse roof.” /// I can imagine a shed/shack/box surrounding the air conditioning equipment put there under zoning regs for noise abatement and/or appearance sake and leaving enough room for a hobo to live like a king if he were allowed to.

    But he’s not…. he’s……King of the road!

I wish someone posted a picture of his abode, instead of a shaky 13 second cell phone video with a 17 second ad with the sound turned up to 11.

  5. Cap'nKangaroo says:

At least he went for the class digs instead of the roof of a Huddle House.

    # 3 bobbo, “Hell yes I can imagine living on a WaffleHouse roof.”

    I frequently live much worse.

My dad use to manage a motel in Big Sur in the 80’s. He found some local hippies living in the walls. Seriously. In the walls.

  8. UncDon says:

Did the man waffle as to his reason for being on the roof?

  9. bbjester says:

Was the man named Bozo Texino? If so, there has been a documentary film maker looking for him in the past.

  10. sargasso_c says:

I am rather impressed, if not strangely touched that the Phantom of the Waffle House was not repeatedly tazed and led cuffed and half naked to a waiting squad car on Fox News.

  11. msbpodcast says:

sargasso_c there were witnesses so they waited until they got him in a cell; then they showed him the Wrath of God for committing the unpardonable crime of being poor in this country…

  12. seetheblacksun says:

What would Bill Hicks have to say about this?

  13. newglenn says:

“cops and firefighters were called to help the man down”
Does anyone really think he needed help getting down?

  14. green says:

I used to live on a main artery above a restaurant in downtown Toronto (Queen West). There was a man living in a makeshift shelter a few roofs over, and had apparently lived there for years. Neighbours would help him out with meals and such.

The property got sold and he had to leave. I haven’t really thought about that guy at all but this story brings back memories. I wonder what happened to him…

  15. Osama bin Laden says:

Green, hey man, what’s up? Thanks for helping me out with food and the ‘such’ (wink, wink). Yeah, I got told to leave that roof but I found a better one with barbed wire for security. Been thinking about you too. I wish I knew how to quit you.

His McMansion was foreclosed on last month.
