Streets from hell

MIT figure struck, injured in Hanoi – The Boston Globe — In Viet Nam to get across the street you have to be fairly neutral and let the thousands of motorcyclists go around you. You do not try to avoid them or there will be mis-communication since you are not a native. You have to kind of trust the system or wait a long time to make a move. This is too bad.

Seymour Papert, a professor emeritus at MIT who is one of the pioneers of artificial intelligence and an authority on how computers can help children learn, was seriously injured after being struck by a motorbike in Hanoi, where he was attending a conference.

The accident on Tuesday left Papert, 78, in a coma. He underwent brain surgery at French Hospital, hospital officials said.

He was struck while crossing a street near his hotel, Hoang Xuan Lan of Hanoi Technology University, told the Associated Press. The university is hosting the conference.

You know John… Sometimes you post something to blog, and something goes horribly wrong right out of the gate… I just hope we have enough bombs to stop the rampaging moterbike kings.

An absolute rule in Hanoi — and Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) and for that matter several places in Asia. Walk purposefully across the street, never look as if you are hesitating and above all, dont confuse the motocycle people by making eye-contact.

It is an interesting but sometimes daunting experience – especially since the car density increases, but the rules are the same!!!!

Another good argument for more freeways.
