This is kind of an eBay for cop shops. Nice thing is they let you register stolen items and if they show up on the site, you get them back free.

Property Room

Today’s law enforcement agencies have property rooms full of stolen or forfeited goods. The rightful owners are not easily identified, and once property is no longer needed as evidence, it must be disposed of properly. Enter Property Room. Founded and managed by former police officers, Property Room harnesses the power of the Internet to quickly move items out of police property rooms, reduce personnel costs and generate revenue well beyond traditional police auction methods. And there is no cost to the participating police or sheriffs department.

Turns out this has been around a while as this article from the NY Times shows.

First, your headline is bullsh!t. You say you can buy your own property back then you turn around and in the body admit that if you find your own property you get it back free.

Second, what are they supposed to do with the stuff store it forever?

Police have been having auctions and sales for a damn long time. I can even remember when they used to sell confiscated firearms. Thought the PC forces now have made them destroy them.

    This isn’t blog worthy.

#1: First, you can only get your own stolen stuff back if you can prove it was yours. Otherwise, you would have to buy it back. So the headline didn’t lie. Second, I think doing this is an excellent idea. Don’t know why you think I don’t. Third, what makes it “blog-worthy” is that, yes, there have been police auctions for a long time, but this is first one I’ve heard of where they’re using the Internet to do it, especially in an eBay fashion from stations around the country. Any more questions?

I thought it was. I hadn’t seen this before.

What sort of things would you prefer to see? Maybe you could suggest some links.

Blogworthy? Sure. A rat fart is blogworthy.

But the “inventory” includes not just “stolen” goods, but “forfeited” goods. In other words, stuff stolen by regular criminals AND stuff stolen by the cops! I wonder if you can get your forfeited goods back for free if you can identify them???

I wholeheartedly agree that stolen goods confiscated from burglars and robbers and embezzlers (and politicians) should be sold off if unclaimed. But, a far, far more important issue in this day and age is the common practice of the police simply taking things from those accused (not necessarily convicted) of a crime for their own (or the department’s) gain.

And of course the good stuff the cops seized has already gone up in smoke!
