A photography professor at New York University is going to have a camera implanted in the back of his head for his next project, according to reports.

Wafaa Bilal, an Iraqi-born assistant professor in the photography and imaging department of NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, has plans to undergo surgery to implant the camera in the next few weeks, the Wall Street Journal reported.

The camera would transmit a live stream of images to visitors of a new museum in Qatar. The camera will be programmed to take pictures at one-minute intervals for one year, the newspaper reported.

In 2008, Bilal created a computer-based work called Virtual Jihadi, a modified version of the game Quest for Bush, an already hacked version of the game Quest for Saddam. Bilal cast himself as a suicide-bomber in the game whose goal is to hunt then-U.S. president George W. Bush.

  1. Faxon says:

Er, excuse me…. Why, exactly, couldn’t this idiot simply velcro said device to his head? Why? Because he craves attention.

He should implant one in his rectum, while he is at it.

  2. noname says:

Yeah, he better watch his back!

  3. deowll says:

This is BS squared and cubed. I read the article and he’s going to have a stud or some such stuck in the back of his head and use it to attach and I suppose detach a camera to it.

The reason to do this rather than just strap one on or put one on a hat pointing backwards is beyond me other than wanting publicity from shills.

  4. hhopper says:

    This is completely stupid.

  5. chuck says:

I read about some research into eye implants which are intended to help blind people see.

In some cases, if someone who can see has gone blind – due to eye damage, it may be possible to replace the eye (or part of the eye) with a CCD device, and then connect it to the optic nerve, allowing the person to regain some partial sight.

I wonder, if the lens implant has a flash-memory component, or could transmit a short wireless signal to a recording device — this would effectively give someone photographic memory.

Would they then be guilty of electronic eavesdropping simply by opening their eyes?

  6. skeptic says:

His next projects are to have implants on his feet to attach his shoes, on his waist to attach his pants and in his ears to attach his earphones.

  7. nick the rat says:

#1 exactly. this is why i hate most artists

  8. Yankinwaoz says:

So what surgen is going to risk his/her license and career to do this for this idiot?

  9. noname says:

Allot of hate on this guy because the surgery.

It all seems very hypercritical, unless you hate the dude in the top picture for his frivolous surgery. Surgical clips have been skull implanted to hold a toupee for years.

I wouldn’t approve of it myself, but the dude has a right, no different then all the strange and frivolous piercings, hair surgery, plastic surgery or tattoos.

People walk around with cameras embedded in classes all the time. This dude is taking it to the next level. I wounder if it will be noticeable or hidden in the tuffs of his hair?

Maybe this Iraqi-born assistant professor didn’t want to be hassled by the police for walking around New York city taking pictures, let alone transmuting a live stream of images to the middle east, visitors of a new museum in Qatar.

That’s funny…Wafaa is a girls name. I think it’s a mistake in the article because I’ve never heard of an Arab man called Wafaa before.

    Sorry off topic.
