Technology News: Internet: Government Study Finds Web Is 1 Percent Porn — This is interesting since I would have guessed half porn! So one out of 100 web pages is porn. Sounds like it could be wrangled in with the .XXX TLD!
A study commissioned by the U.S. government has found that approximately 1 percent of the Web sites that search giants Google and MSN index contain material that is sexually explicit. The Department of Justice released the study results in connection with its effort to revive the 1998 Child Online Protection Act, which the Supreme Court blocked in 2004 on free speech grounds.
The World of Warcraft “The Internet is for Porn Song! (Caution: off-color)
I read this somewhere else. Web content may be around 1% porn but hits on porno sites are higher I believe.
Statistics are interesting, no?
What this has to do with protecting children on the Internet is not a question of 1% or 50%.
1% of content,
50% of bandwidth.
important distinction.
1% is a hell of a lot more content than some people make it sound. Considering that a web page can be about *anything* at all, for a full 1% of all indexed material to be dedicated to pornography is an astounding number.
I’ll go with #2 on this one.
My guess is that superstitious whiners actually spend most of their Web time cruising for pages they feel no one else should look at. Wonder what the “official” stats are?
OMG! That was the funniest movie I’ve ever seen on the web, ever! Thanks Dvorak, you made my day!
One more vote for #2
This is interesting since I would have guessed half porn!
This from your personal research?
🙂
Great…now that “Internet Is For Porn” song is stuck in my head all day.
Funny video
Let’s give credit where it is due.
“The Internet Is For Porn” is from the Broadway musical Avenue Q. Be sure to see a performance of it if it is in your area. It’s a riot!
LOL
OK,
GET this straight…
porn 1%.
Spam 60+% of the bandwidth.
Spam is from Both Legal and illegal and porn sites..
Bandwidth for Porn ISNT that bad.. For the DL its not that bad.
That’s it? I was guessing quite a bit more than 1%.
The bandwidth comments are right on, and show what a profit that 1% is turning.
Actually most of the bandwidth — you’ll discvover — is P2P music and video trading.
#14 what kind of videos? 😉
The OP says… “1 percent of the Web sites that search giants Google and MSN index contain material that is sexually explicit. ”
It does not say “1 percent of the Web sites that search giants Google and MSN index are porn sites.”
So, I have to ask, what percentage is like Danni’s Hard Drive (Mr Dvorak is pals with Danni Ashe, he can ask her) and what percentage is about breast cancer self exams and what percentage is blogs with a occassion self made amature nudie pic tossed in?
I think the figure isn’t small or large. I think its misleading and incomplete.
More likely,
1% of urls,
50+% of online storage
There is a lot behind each URL – alot of front too.
Interestingly, as of 2 days ago I stopped being able to access Dvorak.org from work because “smart filter” has decided that Dvorak makes up part of that 1%. Good for irony, bad for enjoyment at work :'(
“Your request was categorized by SmartFilter as ‘Humor;Nudity;Politics/Opinion’.
If you wish to question or dispute this result, please click here.”
In case its relevant, my particular workplace only cares about the “Nudity” bit, and would let it through otherwise.
#18, consider using RDP to get to your home PC, not only will it avoid the filter, but it will also keep them from logging all of your non work usage.
I love that video- I watch it about once a day. What was the question?
