Ok guys, I want to see both hands on your keyboards!

Gee, I wonder what they’d do for a quarter?!

Salon.com:

Also in 1978, the Popsicle Twins appeared on “The Gong Show.” Barris used to keep the NBC censors off the show’s back by throwing sacrifices at them — acts he knew the censors wouldn’t approve, but that would distract them from the acts he wanted on the air. The Popsicle Twins were one of the stooges, but the censors didn’t get the dirty joke, so the Twins made it onto the show.

The act was officially called “Have You Got a Nickel?” Two barefoot teenage girls (who weren’t twins) walked onstage, giggling abashedly, wearing shorts and T-shirts. Each of them sat down cross-legged and, to the tune of “I’m in the Mood for Love,” proceeded to fellate an orange popsicle. Phyllis Diller gave them a 0. Jamie Farr gave them a 2. Jaye P. Morgan (who would later be fired for flashing her breasts on camera) said, “That’s how I got my start,” and gave them a 10. She was rewarded with one of their popsicles.

“I’m fairly certain that’s when I first thought of chucking it all and moving to the south of France,” Barris would later write.

I get the impression that Phyllis Diller really was as clueless about the act as those censors.

Let’s see… 1978. We should operate from the premise they were at least 18 to avoid any implication regarding minors. So that makes them now sneaking up on 50. Maybe they have children of their own at the age they were then.

“Why look Carol, there’s your Mom on TV enjoying a Popsicle”

    They are both dead. AIDS

  3. Walter Sobcheck says:

Wow, that popsicle reminds me of a penis!

I think Phyllis was way ahead of all of us. (intentional pun)

She gave them a big O, not a zero.

Return to sex education class for a remedial course. You’ll learn Popsicles aren’t a valid vector for the AIDS virus.

I never really liked that show, but this clip is hilarious. (I’d forgotten all about Jaye P. Morgan, too.)

Given the Internet, Cable TV, VCR’s, and lately DVD’s, it’s rather more likely that most of us have seen this sort of thing done somewhere, somewhen, to know exactly what the “twins” were emulating. (Or at least what Barris was getting at.)

Today they’d be in thong bikinis on Fear Factor or something like that…. Or less, on “Survivor”….

Guess it could be worse – Barris could have been in the skit….

    Regards,

    Stu.

I miss the Gong Show. I don’t know why they haven’t broght that back yet. I know they’ve tried an failed, because they try to make it hip (The New Gong Show, I think it was called). Just use the same set, get the same B-list celebs (including Jamie Farr) and maybe a few others, as long as they look good ina wide lapel tux, get a fat stage-hand named Gene (aka, Gene Gene the Dancing Machine!) get a half high-half drunk MC (ala Barris himself) and then get Barris to produce it! TV GOLD!

    I should be in Hollywood….

  8. jtoso says:

Damn! Mrs. Drussleton lied to us….

You’ve done way too much acid in your life!

  11. Rich says:

That was awful- a CIA asassin should plug him! 😉

  12. twinstick says:

This show was years ahead of it’s time. Jaye P. was incredibly georgous in her day. I look at all these ‘reality’ shows and long for the day for some real television.

Man, the Gong Show was in essence, a true time capsule of the tackiness of the 1970s if ever there was one! Great fashion, absolute madness on the set, sexy ladies (and Phyllis) – really what more could you ask for in an American television show? I remember my friends and I went to one of our nearby houses every lunch hour in HIGH school to watch it–Fridays were always the best! And I wont even go into how laugh-out-loud funny Gene Gene the Dancing Machine was! Such simple stupid genius…Wow. Just great.

  14. Taylor says:

Whoever defines this shot as wholesome TV is delusional. Grow up kids.
