The Romans had sophistication in all things of the body, from baths to bacchanalia.

Hundreds of tourists have been queuing in the ancient Roman city of Pompeii, Italy, to gain entry to one of the city’s most extravagant brothels.

The 2,000-year-old building, featuring erotic fresco paintings, has been re-opened after a costly restoration.

The Lupanare – from the Latin word “lupa” for prostitute – is regarded as one of Pompeii’s main attractions.

What if you could live as a rich Roman noble in the early millenium?

  1. Don says:

    No thanks.

What with the lack of modern medicine and the lack of knowledge of basic hygiene (although the Romans were better at it than most,) I’ll take our backwards mixed up society any day.

    Don

  2. Smartalix says:

it’s always nice at the top of the heap, no matter when or where you live. There’s ample evidence that during its golden age Rome was quite advanced in many ways we find difficult to acknowledge.

  3. SetarconeX says:

One slight quibble with the article, the Latin word ‘lupa’ literally means ‘a female wolf.’ It’s something of a euphamism for prostitute.

All of which gives a certain amount of insight into exactly what kind of women the ancient Romans were willing to pay for. đŸ˜‰

  4. TJGeezer says:

Wolf-like women? Highly socialized, intelligent, territorial and quite secure in knowing their standing in the pecking order?

  5. tallwookie says:

bah – they were at the peak of their civilization, we are past ours…

besides, 8 glasses of wine for the pleasure of the company of a young women is a much better price than it is today – dinner, movie, flowers and all that considered.

As one of Mel Brook’s characters in History of the World, Part 1 says… “It’s GOOD to be King!

it’s always nice at the top of the heap, no matter when or where you live.

With “nice” only being relative to the people who were supporting you.

From the link: Sex workers were often slaves…

    * 500,000 soldiers (legionaries totalling 150,000)
    * Approximately 600 Senators made up the elite of the elite.
    * Perhaps up to 30,000 men filled the roles of Equestrians (knights), or the second tier of the aristocracy.
    * Rome itself was made up of over 1 million people…
    * The slave population of Rome approached 500,000 on its own, probably half of which were owned by the 600 men of the Senate.

~600 men probably owned ~250,000 slaves?

Nice place to visit. But I wouldn’t want to live there.

“As I would not be a slave, so would I not be a Master.”

  7. 0113addiv says:

The one thing that the Romans didn’t have back then was video. Today the “Romans” are still having all the fun but at least we can pay a nominal fee and be a part of it in the safety of our own homes.[comment edited]

  8. Max says:

Pompei is perhaps one of the most interesting place I’ve ever been!

  9. Awake says:

They had whorehouses? Why? I thought that they had orgies every weekend.

  10. DeLeMa says:

My luck, I’d be the one who got to clean up afterwards…

  11. James Molloy says:

Out teacher brought our class there when I was 14 years old.

Fr. Dargan: “Well boys! This is you first, and last, time in a brothel.”
