Orange County Republican leaders on Thursday called for the withdrawal of a GOP congressional candidate who has acknowledged that his campaign sent a letter threatening Hispanic immigrant voters.

County Republican Chairman Scott Baugh told The Associated Press that the party’s executive committee voted unanimously to ask candidate Tan D. Nguyen to pull out.

Earlier Thursday, Nguyen said in an interview that he has fired a campaign staffer who may have been the source of a letter that falsely told Hispanics that immigrants can go to jail if they try to vote.

“I did not do this. I did not approve of any letter,” said Nguyen, the challenger to Democratic U.S. Rep. Loretta Sanchez. Nguyen is a Vietnamese immigrant whose opposition to illegal immigration figures heavily in his underdog campaign.

State and federal officials are investigating the mailing for possible violations of election law.

Baugh said that after speaking with the state attorney general’s office and the private company that distributed the mailer, he believes Nguyen had direct knowledge of the letter.

Nice to see that it’s not just liberals who can’t figure out the difference between “legal” and “illegal” when it comes to immigrants.

  1. gadlaw says:

    From TFA

The letter was written in Spanish and mailed to an estimated 14,000 Democratic voters in central Orange County. It warns, “You are advised that if your residence in this country is illegal or you are an immigrant, voting in a federal election is a crime that could result in jail time.”

The first part of the statement was correct, the second part was voter intimidation and probably worthy of charges being brought. If you’re here illegally then of course it’s not legal for you to vote. If you are here legally then it’s your civic duty to vote.

Candidate Tan D. Nguyen should heed calls to take himself out of the race and voters in that district should make a special effort to get to the polls to make sure he gets zero votes.

#1, that language is tame in comparison to the letter that the NYC DOT (Dept. of Traffic) sends you if you miss paying a parking summons. I wish I had a copy so you could actually see one, but they use BOLD capital letters warning that your license will be suspended, the credit bureau will be contacted, your car will be impounded, you won’t be allowed to vote, a warrant for your arrest will be issued and if all else fails, God will condemn you. I’m exagerating a little but I, really, their letters are offensive and an abuse of power. And they are not kidding! I once had my license suspended because I missed a $7 surcharge. When I got pulled over near Atlantic City for speeding, the cop almost arrested me for driving with a suspended license that I was never made aware of. I had to travel almost two hours from nyc to make a court appearance in the county I was ticketed and lose a day of work. People with State power (the government) are motherf*ckers. The police state is here.

  3. Lee says:

As a former Republican myself, it’s more than a little sad to see the party self-destructing in this manner, but it was the lies, corruption and dirty tricks that turned me off to them several years ago. Well, not to mention the bloviating, the drunken-sailor spending, and the strategy-free warmongering. Oh well, that’s karma for you.

  4. Named says:

    #3,

Your comment reminds me of a Simpsons episode…
Homer: America, take a good look at your beloved candidates. They’re
nothing but hideous space reptiles. [unmasks them]
    [audience gasps in terror]
Kodos: It’s true, we are aliens. But what are you going to do about
it? It’s a two-party system; you have to vote for one of us.
    [murmurs]
    Man1: He’s right, this is a two-party system.
    Man2: Well, I believe I’ll vote for a third-party candidate.
Kang: Go ahead, throw your vote away.
[Kang and Kodos laugh out loud]
[Ross Perot smashes his “Perot 96” hat]

  5. Mick says:

Legal immigrants aren’t allowed to vote either, unless they are citizens. Why do Democrats insist on not preventing illegal voting?

  6. Smartalix says:

It is true that not all legal immigrants are citizens, but some are. To tar all with the same brush is disingenuous.

  7. xrayspex says:

Why do Democrats insist on not preventing illegal voting

Why do Republicans allow aliens to abduct cattle and do NOTHING to stop it????

Why do people named Mick pick their noses and wipe it on the wall?

The moon is made of green cheese and yet there are children in Bangladesh eating sticks!

    Something is wrong here!

  8. Pmitchell says:

THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR THAT LETTER IT WAS WRONG IN ANY CONTEXT
win by being better, not by intimidation

  9. Mark says:

    7. xrayspecs, did your mother drop you on your head? Still, pretty funny.

  10. Steve S. says:

The contents of this letter are basically correct and just reaffirm current US law. Any Immigrant who has become a naturalized citizen (such as myself) who feels threatened by this letter, is perhaps is not smart enough to vote.

This letter may have been stupid, but anyone who considers it a moral outrage, has too much time on their hands and has not looked at current events.

Toughen up people! If you can’t get past something as trivial as this, what are you going to do when life throws a real curveball at you.

    Steve

  11. Ballenger says:

What makes this exceptionally sleazy is that it was directed toward a particularly vulnerable group. The typical legal immigrant, potentially Democratic voter, not fully confident about and acclimated to the nuance of politics in their new country. This comes from the same family of political racketeers as mass mailing campaigns to senior citizens asking for political donations to help “save” Social Security, who at the same time are doing everything in their power to see it bankrupted. Just more evidence that these guys aren’t in politics for public service reasons.

  12. Roc Rizzo says:

Why do the Republicans HATE this country?

Have I told you yet how much I dislike these people?

  13. traaxx says:

Exactly how are criminal immigrants that steal from the citizens of this country a vunerable group. They are no more vunveralbe than any other criminal when they are caught. If caught they should go to jail. They haven’t been asked to come, they came illegally hence that’s why they are called illegal.

I question any group’s right to hold office that would defend a criminal’s right to steal. The criminal immigrants steal our services, welfare and social security. Using the same illegal false documents that allow them to work they steal, often under multiple names these services. Why even work when they can just come and steal the welfare and money that is supposed to be a safety net for our citizens.

Mexico has just as many rich families as the US, actually more than the US, so why can’t they support their own people instead of bleeding the middle class in the United States instead.

If anything the letter didn’t go far enough. If someone votes in our election, an election made possible by the blood of our forefathers, then they should not just be ejected from this country they should go to jail. We’ve seen how just a few votes can change an election in Florida, Washington and Ohio. The Democrates/Communist are fond of saying every vote is important, so is the legality of each and every vote. Those that don’t think so have renounced their heritage and the suffering that their forefathers had undergon. They may have the right to do that to themselves, but not for me.

  14. Smartalix says:

    13,

How often does it have to be pointed out that many immigrants are citizens before that fact sinks in?

  15. AB CD says:

    >directed toward a particularly vulnerable group. The typical legal immigrant, potentially Democratic voter, not fully confident about and acclimated to the nuance of politics in their new country.

Well, they have to be here at least 7 years to get citizenship, and take a test to prove their knowledge of basic civics, which most Americans can’t pass. You seem to be saying that legal immigrants should be able to vote right away without getting citizenship.

  16. doug says:

no better evidence that Republicans conflate immigrant and illegal immigrant are the postings from our right-wing contingent.

and that radical liberal USA Today recently had a story stating that illegal voting was not a significant problem. So all those laws that make it harder to vote must have a different target …

  17. OhForTheLoveOf says:

#17 – They do have a different target… Poor blacks, who vote Democratic when they vote.

  18. doug says:

#18. quite so. in the guise of fighting “fraud.”

  19. Greg Allen says:

What’s the deal with Republicans and dirty campaigning?

I know, I know… both parties do crappy stuff (and always have) but it’s pretty clear that this batch of Republicans have taken it far above and beyond… to a truly noxious art form.

  20. Angel H. Wong says:

When the Irish immigrants came to the USA, politicians were screaming that hell was going to be set loose, and yet nothing happened.

When the Italian immigrants came to the USA, politicians were screaming that the nation was going to sink in corruption, and yet nothing happened.

Now that the hispanic immigrants are arriving at the USA, politicians are screaming that the nation will sink into poverty. So far nothing has happened and the only ones sinking the nation are the politicians themselves.

  21. Steve S says:

This issue was about a stupid letter that is, in the scheme of things, MEANINGLESS let alone the “crime of the century” it is being portrayed as.

    #21
There is an extremely VAST difference between LEGAL and ILLEGAL immigration!!!! One has emigrated to this country through the legal process and the other has broken Federal law! One is a welcome addition to this country and the other is a criminal! Until this simple fact is agreed on by everyone, there will be no rational discussion or solution.

    Steve

  22. Podesta says:

    Wow! The moonbats are out.

Hopefully, for the last time, that letter was meant to intimidate immigrants, not undocumented aliens. Not long off the boat Tan had done his Republican hard ass reading and decided to try one of the tactics he read about. After all, that is the way many a successful Republican (Rehnquist anyone?) got his start.

A recent examination of voting by undocumented aliens in Oregon during the last several years found a grand total of seven people. Wouldn’t be surprised to see similar results in other states.

  23. Angel H. Wong says:

    Steve S.

Legal or not, the level of discrimination is the same.
