  1. Another useless gimmick from Google, I guess an employee was spending 20% of his time on a codeless app inventor.

I’m amazed how fast App Inventor turned into a “Hypercard for mobile” meme. Maybe JCD should put meme wrangler on his Google profile?

  3. deowll says:

The reason for keeping seeds of as many strains of domestic plants in cryo as possible is that modern hybrids lack all diversity, planting the seeds can produce iffy results in the second and third generation and new strains of disease keep appearing as well as the occasional new market need. You need something with a more diverse genetic code to work with to try and find some resistance. If we ever have biological warfare this will become ultra true.

This to me is much less a doomsday thing than acting in a reasonable and prudent manner. Having corn, wheat, oats, or rice go extinct as a crop because of a pathogen would be a bad thing.

We did have a case some years back where they had to rework their hybrids fast because a pathogen was about to take an entire crop off he market or at least all the hybrids American farmers were growing were vulnerable.

The favorite banana strain of my youth is pretty much gone and the replacement is in danger.
