This explains a lot about some of our readers who seem to be on DU all day to comment on posts.

A new study published in the July issue of Pediatrics, Television and Video Game Exposure and the Development of Attention Problems, has concluded that too much time spent watching television and playing video games can double the risk of attention problems in children and young adults.

Edward Swing and colleagues at Iowa State University assessed two age groups: middle schoolers (third-fourth-fifth graders) and 2010 college students.

Using the American Academy of Pediatrics recommendation of watching TV or playing video games less than two hours a day, they discovered that “Those who exceeded the AAP recommendation were about 1.6 times to 2.2 times more likely to have greater than average attention problems.”

[…Dr. Dimitri Christakis] also explained that his own research found that the faster-paced shows increased the risk of attention problems because “You prime the mind to accept that pace. Real life doesn’t happen fast enough to keep your attention.”

Maybe it’s all the pot you smoke while watching TV and playing games that is causing the attention problems.

  2. jccalhoun says:

This study is co-authored by Craig Anderson and Doug Gentile so the conclusion was decided before the study was started. Neither Anderson or Gentile have ever met a form of media that wasn’t bad for you.

Any time you see any study about videogames being bad there is a good chance that Anderson or one of his cronies like Gentile is involved.

#2 Sounds like they found a way to make money and are sticking to it.

Whatever is wrong with me it isn’t from watching to much TV. My fellow nuts who constantly post here are much more likely to be on line than watching the boob tube.

I’m watching a podcast while posting though.

There are one or more words missing between the first “to” and “on” in the above sentence.

How many hours of TV have you watched today?

LOL finally an explanation for Bobbo.

I find being on DV hones my multitasking abilities.

While I agree much found here is right wing drivel, I find a sense of giving back to the sheeple community in providing insightful perspective they can sleep on.

  7. Buzz says:

Zero research has been conducted on the notion that children and young adults with preexisting attention problems tend to gravitate to excessive video game and television watching…

  8. Gilgamesh says:

I’m pretty sure that posting this will lower my self esteem.

TV stinks. It’s for the birds.

This also explains a lot of the dumb ass moronic lead-in remarks and comments on the stupid stories you post.

    OMG!

    What do we have here??..

These articles have been peer-reviewed, edited, typeset, and approved by the author.

    Translation:

-another useless, scripted study designed specifically for political
and social engineering agendas as well as cramming tailored mainstream media sound bytes into your noodle 100x
    a day.

    oh yeah, and..

Ain’t it nice how they try to associate two completely different formats as the cause for the same outcome?

All things being equal, Teevee lulls you into a passive, suggestive-hypnotic trance for which you have almost zero control over, while most all computer games keep you actively engaged, hyper-focused and almost completely in control.

    Classic.

I wonder which particular industry conglomerate funded this pseudo-science prize catch of a study..? (and will they produce yet another useless pill as the “cure” for only the symptoms of this no doubt, -soon-to-be-labeled new disease / syndrome??)
