    Pretty cool…

  2. Sideath says:

    ooh a dam. How original.

  3. Matthew says:

Bring it on. I cannot wait.

I can imagine training people to perform tasks on hardware this advanced would be beneficial. You could get over phobias such as heights or learn to respond to emergency simulations; and games like doom will really be murder simulations.

It seems the video game market has come a long way since I last played a video game (Myst).

  5. James Hill says:

Now, just get the game makers to multithread to this degree and you’re all set.

  6. GotoDengo says:

#3 – Good point about this level of reality being a “murder simulation”. I think there is some merit to claims by crime activists that violent games desensitize kids… but I think it’s overstated b/c of the “cartoon” factor. But the realistic graphics and high-def A/V home systems will create a virtual-reality that I tink will change the equation, and really desensitze us to violence (and sex – where’s that Remedy demo?) to a real extent.

I think there are going to be big social ramifications after a couple decades of this. I can’t wait, tough – I’ll be first in line! 🙂

This is really annoying me now.
I was going to buy a macbook pro (core duo). Just before my purchase, i heard about the release of core 2 duo, so i thought i’d wait just a few months.

This still hasnt been released yet, and now they’re announcing an early release of core quadro. When will i EVER get myself that macbook pro? This makes it very hard for me to buy a laptop knowing constantly that something better is just around the corner.

  8. GregA says:

    Marc,

If history is any guide, your mac will never play games like that, so go ahead and buy away!

  9. mliving says:

So now gamers are going to have to buy quad-core PCs to replay the same flippin’ games that we’ve been playing for the last 10 years!

Its GAMING. NOT PHYSICS SIMULATION! Please…

This seems to be more of a sales video for Intel then for some sorta advanced gaming system.

    I Wii my case! 🙂

  10. Adam says:

Well, it certainly looks very nice, but the animation of the character was made to look even more shoddy in comparison with the ultra-realistic visuals.

  11. I think if video games had long ago began to support multiple processors we would have symmetric processing as a common platform now. Look at how much the GPUs have improved over the years.

If we had dual processors we would have hit Doom III levels of graphics sooner.

  12. Paul_in_NC says:

Is it just me, or does the person “narrating” the video sound like that Swedish Chef from the Muppet Show?

  13. Mark T. says:

    12 – Bork! Bork! Bork!

Wow, this is exciting stuff if you are an avid PC gamer. Each year, the games get more detailed with better physics.

BTW, the website for the developer is http://www.remedygames.com. They are the same people that came up with “bullet time” in the very good Max Payne series.

Imagine what Grand Theft Auto 5 will be like if they use multiple cores. Of course, that game will be developed for XBox 360 and PS3 first and will likely be a PC port.

Marc and GregA, if you wish to spend the bucks like I did, buy a Mac Pro and use Boot Camp to run your games. I just loaded Half-Life 2 Episode One on my X1900XT equipped machine and it runs perfectly smooth with all the settings maxed out at 1600×1200. Amazing stuff!

And don’t worry about the quads. It appears to be upgradeable (maybe):

  14. Mark T. says:

Oops, I just read the bottom of the Alan Wake game homepage. It is for Vista and XBox 360 ONLY!

I guess I may not be playing it anytime soon after all. Running on Vista, I bet you will need 2GB of ram just to run it.

  15. Mule Acid says:

All I can say is wow!

    BUT

If the basic concept of games doesn’t change, then all the photo-realism and eye-candy in the world isn’t going to make any difference.

Just look at how boring Doom III was. Just another rehash that looks better, but it’s the quality of a gaming concept that keep you coming back, aren’t as dependent visuals,

    Atari Asteroids and PacMan anyone…..
