Actually, the EFF is backing Gizmodo, at least dealing with the search and seizure warrant.

Go back and read the original posts from Gizmodo. They weren’t sure if they had been scammed or bought a fake Iphone from China or somewhere. That didn’t go away until Apple claimed it.
What is a bricked prototype worth? Nothing to me but Gizmodo paid 5,000 for it without even being sure what it was so what is the real value of the item even if stolen under California law?
Then there is the observation that Gizmodo did in fact return the item in question to the rightful owner as soon as ownership was established.
I think they could honestly argue in court that they tried very hard to find out if the phone belonged to Apple or not and once the rightful owner claimed it turned the item in question over to the owner as soon as it could be arranged.

Easy, don’t leave your iPhone on the counter. Better yet, if you are a bar fly, skip the iPhone and smart phones all together and get a phone that fits in your pocket.

I am far more concerned that police are now going to be sending in the swat team every time someone loses a phone. I mean, it seems like if the police will conduct this type of investigation for the Apple corporation, then they should be willing to devote these types of resources to every cell phone that is lost or stolen for now on.

Gosh, why doesn’t Intel just buy AMD? That would be as good for competition as if Apple bought ARM. “So, you want a license to use the ARM architecture in something that competes with our grossly overpriced hardware, huh?”
The Gizmodo guys now claim that they didn’t know the phone was a prototype and belonged to Apple even though they were willing to pay $5000 for it.

Apple gains nothing from buying ARM to advance their corporate strategy. Apple innovation and value add is around software and industrial design.
To protect their hardware platform from being copied, the ARM architecture provides enough customization for them to do so. This customization capability is what they saw in these chip design firms.

If Apple buys ARM, they will royally fuck companies like HTC, Nintendo and Samsung hard enough they will throw a big time Anti-trust lawsuit and Nintendo is bigger than Toyota so expect a King sized lawsuit.
According to Wikipedia, ARM was founded as a joint venture between Acorn Computers, Apple Computer (now Apple Inc.) and VLSI Technology
#16 Agreed but I would be surprised that “cutting off the competitions air supply” is direction Apple is interested in pursuing.
I would also doubt the FTC or EU would allow that purchase anyway. I’m sure Intel and MIPS would be delighted if that happens though 🙂
