Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) – Mayor Oscar Goodman has refused an invitation to meet with President Obama when he arrives in town on Thursday. Mayor Goodman called President Obama a slow learner after he told Americans not to blow money on a weekend in Las Vegas if they were saving to put their kids through college. “I’ve got other things to do quite frankly for my constituents here in Las Vegas who rely on me to do the right thing as a mayor,” explained Mayor Goodman.

Mayor Goodman has more important things like attend budget meetings during a major shortfall than meet with President Barack Obama when he visits Las Vegas Friday, even though he’s invited by the White House. “Were you surprised to get that invitation in light of comments you’ve made before and your opinion on him and what he says,” asked Action News reporter Heather Klein.

“A little bit in the sense I would think they would know that I would say I’m not coming,” said Mayor Goodman.

They say time heals all wounds but not this time. Mayor Goodman not backing down after the president used Las Vegas the example of where not to go if you’re saving money. This is strike two for the mayor. “We are hurting, we have people in foreclosures, we have people having a hard time feeding their families and we can’t stand to have a flippant statement made,” said Mayor Goodman.

“I haven’t heard an apology, I haven’t heard a response, all I do is get invitations,” Goodman went on to say.

Let’s hope Vegas never needs a bailout.

Vegas will be fine. Better scoot down to Austin. Looks like a war-zone. Ignoring them seems like a better strategy.

  2. Ron Larson says:

Mayor Goodman seems to have forgotten that gambling and LV vacations are considered DISCRETIONARY spending by most people. His sense of entitlement puts him the ranks of the health care insurance and financial industry.

  3. W. T. Effyall says:

While I’m certainly not in agreement will everything Obama says, it is beyond bizarre that anyone could consider the following controversial:

“When times are tough, you tighten your belts. You don’t go buying a boat when you can barely pay your mortgage. You don’t blow a bunch of cash on Vegas when you’re trying to save for college.”

  4. Somebody_Else says:

    What a douche…

  5. dusanmal says:

@#2,3 : Obama didn’t need to specify Vegas. No one would complain. But, twice he did. Insensitive and without a single clue about the business. Running the country is not the same as teaching the students and organizing crowds, it has immense monetary (an other) consequences. Thoughtless, insensitive and incompetent. Thumbs up for Mayor for having some backbone.

Dammit, you have to be more careful! You’re going to start flame wars with a lot of users here.

Don’t say boat, don’t say Vegas, don’t say tighten belt (for fatties), don’t buy (because that’s what US does good at), don’t say college (because no one will understand you at this point), and so on.

Regardless if you don’t know of anyone that visits Vegas other than gambling like I do you don’t mentioned it!!!

  7. W. T. Effyall says:

Would this be politically correct enough?

“When times are tough, you tighten your belts… unless of course you wear suspenders, which as we all can agree is one of many valid lifestyle choices. You don’t go buying an unspecified item one might consider an unnecessary luxury when you can barely pay your mortgage… unless of course you are a renter, which is in no way to be considered a social stigma. You don’t blow a bunch of cash on unspecified leisure activities in locations I dare not name when you’re trying to save for the educational venue of your preference for your children… by which I certainly mean no offense to those without children, or for whom education is not a valid expense.”

  8. Orange says:

It’s a good time to buy a boat. Lots of sellers and few buyers mean cheaper boats and cheaper boats mean more money for beer. If oil comes down, all the better next summer. Come home from deployment, grab a boat a broad and beers and you got a real summer adventure. The Great Lakes can support lots of boats. If the GM scam cracks wide open, there will be plenty of cheap boats. Toyotas are sinking in price, so cheap trucks to tow with. Have a good time guys!

  9. Breetai says:

I don’t think he’d be saying that if he did’t all ready get denied his cut of pork.

  10. Mr Diesel says:

Screw Obomba. Regardless of those who think he walks on water it is clear he doesn’t have a clue.

Good for the mayor. I have been to LV numerous times and will go back in spite of what that fucktard (Obomba) has to say about it.

  11. Curtis E. Flush says:

Gambling is good for those who enjoy paying taxes, in this case a tax on people who are bad at math.

  12. RTaylor says:

Screw Vegas. It was more fun when the mobs ran the town.

  13. chuck says:

    How about this, then:

“When times are tough, you tighten your belts. You don’t go off and spend 3 weeks vacationing in Hawaii. You don’t blow a bunch of cash on pork-filled stimulus when you’re trying to save the economy.”

    and then

“When times are tough, if you really want health-care reform, and you have a 60-seat majority, just pass a bill!! Don’t delay until Christmas, then tell Congress to go on vacation and then let your super-majority disappear.”

  14. sargasso says:

Las Vegas hospitality, has really gone to the dogs since the corporations took over. That’s all I’m saying.

  15. Uncle Patso says:

Humans are the weirdest species. You throw a piece of cardboard or a piece of plastic on a tabletop and suddenly someone else owns your house? No other animal engages in this behavior.

  16. Cap'nKangaroo says:

I’m willing to bet that if the White House had not invited the Mayor, the Mayor would have made a big stink out of the fact that he wasn’t invited.

The Mayor getting angry over the President’s statement is as dumb as when the broccoli growers got upset when Bush the Elder said he didn’t like broccoli. Get over it.

  17. Abynorml says:

Try making a living in Vegas! Were a city of people, not just casinos! All trying to make a living were not a corporation, and everytime Obama says something stupid about Vegas it costs the people of Vegas jobs! He needs to shut the hell up and stop the Vegas hate! He sure thought it was a great idea for people to waste money to see the olympics in Chicago!

  18. m.c. in l.v. says:

Oscar Goodman is a corrupt drunken scumbag lawyer masquerading as a mayor. I haven’t seen him do anything significant for the city in the 5 years we’ve been here. Fuck him. He’s an insignificant wart on the asshole of America and will be an even worse governor than he is a “mayor”.

“When times are tough, you tighten your belts. You don’t go buying a boat when you can barely pay your mortgage. You don’t blow a bunch of cash on Vegas when you’re trying to save for college.” Hey Asshole Goodman, reading comprehension, you need it.

#14 Sargasso – It’s about to get worse. Harrah’s is about to take over the operations of Planet Hollywood on Friday. One more cog in their corporate machine.

  19. Rick Cain says:

Get over it mayor, we know your filthy little town is a haven for prostitution, gambling, buggery, gluttony, and general excessive behavior.

  20. amodedoma says:

Viva Las Vegas!!! After all, why should a successful mayor fall all over himself for a loser president like Obama. Regardless of the cause Obama’s on his way to becoming one of the most ineffective presidents of all time.

  21. W. T. Effyall says:

    What a load.

Nobody actually believes that the general populace is so transfixed by Obama’s every utterance that the Las Vegas economy will suddenly vaporize because thousands of folks are suddenly going “Hey, honey… cancel that Vegas vacation… Obama says it’s a bad idea!”

  22. Gary, the dangerous infidel says:

This president is incredibly irresponsible, isn’t he? The next thing you know, he’ll be advising people not to spend their grocery money on liquor and hookers.

But wait just a minute! If you listen to his obstructionist Republican opponents, Obama has absolutely no credibility whatsoever, and everyone with any sense will be doing the exact opposite of what he says! So Mayor Goodman should be profusely THANKING the president, because everyone will now be FLOCKING to Vegas to blow the kids’ college fund. This is a huge favor that Obama has done for Vegas, and all of Nevada.

What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, just like your money and self-respect.

  23. Curtis E. Flush says:

    The mayor’s “outrage” is simulated.

He is a Very Angry Guy In Name Only.
