The new Japanese robot Miuro is designed to turn an iPod music player into a scuttling boombox-on-wheels.

Equipped with speaker systems developed with Japanese audio-maker Kenwood Corp., the 35-centimeter long machine, which looks like a ball popping out of an egg, from Tokyo-based venture ZMP Inc. will roll and twist from room to room blaring music.

Apple Computer Inc.’s iPod portable player locks into the top of the robot, which comes in white, black, yellow or red.

ZMP President Hisashi Taniguchi said robotics technology adds another convenience to mobile music. “The robot helps you listen to music wherever you are without even thinking about it,” he said. “Sometimes I don’t even have the energy to put on a CD.”

Separately sold options add a camera and sensors to the robot so it will map out its own position and remember routes, Taniguchi said.

I guess you can tell it to stop following you — “shut up and go back to your room!”

  1. Tom says:

Want your iPod to follow you around on wheels? The short answer is no.

  2. Joao says:

Now if only someone develops a Tamagochi game for the iPod, we get the perfect Techno Puppy…

  3. GregA says:

My satelite radio will never do this. That is why i prefer my satelite radio.

  4. James Hill says:

Wonder if this will work with the new iPods that will be announced on the 12th…

  5. Doesn’t… have…enough energy to…. PUT ON A CD!?!? I’m seriously losing it. Someone wake me when it’s over. You’d figure someone too lazy to put a CD in a CD player would be popping pills to solve the problem… Ah, paradox.

Oh well. They still make pretty cool robots…. that don’t need pills…..yet.

  6. Angel H. Wong says:

Seeing how the Apple Execs tend to behave, chances are that they will make a similar device buy gayer in appearance and then EVERY iPod manufactured will only run ONLY on Apple hardware.

  7. Podesta says:

Joao, the iDog has been around for years.

    A game would be a good follow-up.

Angel, the iPod is fully compatible with three OSes: Apple, Windows and Motorola. With a bit of tampering, it is also Linux compatible.

  8. Joao says:

    #7 Thanks. but it won’t follow U around…

also, what kind of OS is motorola?

  9. spsffan says:

The first trip and fall lawsuit will doom it in the USA, not that anyone wants this thing in the first place.

    Can you say Segway?
