  1. Is the increase in Windows 7 sales ( through the roof) and major numbers dropping XP due to a better product with Windows 7 , pent up demand or just the fact that people don’t know how to install Windows Xp and XP drivers on the new machines
    Time will tell
Its funny how Vista never seems to be mentioned by Microsoft at all even though with the latest service pack it was acceptable

  2. sargasso says:

Pretty much a foregone conclusion that the Moon wasn’t realistic when fighting two land wars, in a deep recession and the shuttle fleet either exploding or falling apart on the launch pad. Anyone laying odds on how long the ISS will stay in orbit without shuttle support?

  3. bac says:

There was a small annoyance in XP that I found interesting. When installing third party applications, you were given a dialog asking if you wanted to place the program’s icon everywhere (Start menu, Desktop, Quick Launch and Tray). Of course, most people just clicked ok to quickly get to the program. This led to a desktop full of icons. Microsoft deemed this a problem and provided the Hide Unused Icons on the Desktop notification and clean up software. Was there some kind of disconnect between third party players and Microsoft over the policy of desktop icons? Or was there some technical problem with having so many icons on the desktop?

Does Windows 7 have the Hide Unused Icons On the Desktop system? If so, why hasn’t Microsoft clamped down on third party venders to prevent too many icons on the desktop?

Just seems like a weird problem to have in an operating system.

  4. qb says:

Would Microsoft open an exe store?

  5. Somebody_Else says:

“No moon program” is a bit misleading. They’re cutting Ares I (the crew lift vehicle), funding SpaceX, and funding the heavy lift vehicle.

    And that’s assuming Congress agrees.

  6. Mr Ed says:

There is nothing useful on the moon. Good call.

  7. deowll says:

#6 Thanks. I guess we only really need the heavy lifter.

The military most likely has something smaller to put up satellites.

  8. Dirk Thundernuts says:

Technology will fly you to the moon, religion will fly you into a building.

  9. Zybch says:

#1 also pretty funny that apple has pretty much STFU about Snow Job, I mean Leopard after all the incompatibilities and data loss (at least vista didn’t eat your data if you logged in with a guest account).

XP was/is a pretty amazing OS, and that its had such a very long life attests to this despite every year in the last decade being labeled the ‘Year of Linux on the Desktop’ and Apple constantly spreading their snarky half-truths about windows. People still overwhelmingly prefer the MS alternative to both these self-styled ‘superior’ alternatives.

I still get clients telling me they want their new machines to have XP, but I think its just familiarity with XP, not for any actual reason beyond that, like a nice worn in pair of shoes. Sit them down with Win7 and they change their tune very quickly, so I think it IS because 7 is better, not just because all the old hardware is starting to fail and is being replaced.

  10. qb says:

#10 Funny that you didn’t bring up Vista.

  11. Special Ed says:

#10 – “People Wal-mart door greeters still overwhelmingly prefer the MS alternative to both these self-styled ’superior’ alternatives.”

    /FTFY

  12. Somebody_Else says:

    @ #11

Vista doesn’t eat your data. Vista’s only problem was poor hardware support at launch, and that was cleared up after a few months. Heck, Vista with SP1 is faster than XP on most modern hardware.

Unfortunately, by the time SP1 came along all the cool kids on the intertubes had decided it was cool to say “OMG Vista is teh suck!!!!111”

What’s really funny is how all the Vista haters love 7. It’s essentially the same damn thing with a new taskbar.

  13. bac says:

For all those American astronauts not scheduled to fly the last few shuttle missions, start sending resumes to the Russian Space Agency. Of course, after the shuttle missions stop, all American astronauts can move to Russia.

No more astronauts needed in America.

  14. Angel H. Wong says:

The moon program has been stalled until they can place “evidence” that they did landed on the moon in the 60s.

  15. qb says:

#13 So you’re saying that Vista was a “technical success”?

  16. qb says:

#17 Oh no, I offended the fabois! 😉

  17. Somebody_Else says:

    #16

Yes, especially in terms of security. I won’t deny that it had its issues, but it certainly wasn’t as bad as a lot of people pretend it was.

  18. qb says:

I’m not trying to beat up Microsoft, I actually like lots of individuals who work there. What I do know is that the Mac and Linux are not Windows 7’s main competitors. Windows XP is the competition.

And seriously, all bashing aside, I’m glad Microsoft has finally got Win7 out the door in good shape. It’s good for the industry.
