Equal support for girls’ sports investigated

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. : Should girls’ sports have cheerleaders too? A federal civil-rights office is looking into a complaint that asks for equal promotion and publicity in one southern New York athletic conference.

The president of the Southern Tier Athletic Conference says a parent complaint filed with the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights inspired the investigation.

“From what we understand, there was a complaint made by a parent that cheerleaders did not cheer at events other than football and boys’ basketball,” Richard Stank says. His conference includes 20 large-enrollment high schools across the Southern Tier.

Stack says the civil-rights office is questioning coaches and athletic officials.

Title IX, the federal law that prohibits sex discrimination against students, requires equal benefits for girls’ and boys’ teams, including cheerleader and band support, according to the Women’s Sports Foundation, an advocacy group.

David Garbarino, athletic director for the Binghamton City School District, says STAC’s practice has been not to have cheerleaders at girls’ games.

“If you’re looking at it in black and white, there is a violation,” he said.

The civil rights office’s public affairs department did not return calls Friday.

  1. Mike says:

Well, you don’t have the band performing at swim meets or wrestling matches either… must be a civil rights violation.

    Give me a break.

  2. sh says:

We want cheerleaders for our Golf team or we’re gonna sue!

  3. Andy says:

I was on the swimming team in high school and preferred that there were no cheerleaders there. They are irritating and pointless.

  4. Why aren’t the networks doing wall to wall coverage on this story along with the JonBenet coverage. They’re equally important.

  5. Jim says:

I want the cheerleaders to have cheerleaders!

  6. OmarTheAlien says:

Hmm, I’ve never had a post booted, but seems like a circle jerk would qualify for cheerleader and band support.

  7. syngensmyth says:

I think men should be forced to be cheer leaders at women’s sports. It is simply the correct thing to do. Draft ‘um, I say.

I think there is a judge in Michigan who will happily make this ruling.

    Rah-Rah! Sis-Boom-Ba!!

  8. Bruce IV says:

Why not we just play sports and not worry about federal interference, hmm?

  9. OhForTheLoveOf says:

    I love cheerleaders.
Vapid girls with tight asses who are willing to screw any guy on the team.

    Girls B-Ball needs cheerleaders too.
Vapid boys with tight asses who are willing to screw any guy on the team.

(Oh christ – Am I really stooping to gay male cheerleader jokes now?)

  10. prophet says:

#6 – I think having the cheerleaders there for that “event” would actually help the situation….

I would want the band to play 1812 Overture, you know…with…umm…canons at the end…..yeah….canons….

  11. Simon says:

Put them on the bus and in the library and while you are at it, put some in my garden, I’m quite over those concrete midgets with pointy hats, shovels and beards.

Why do we need sports as an excuse for some vacuous dancing parrot’s anyway?

put them back in the bars and in the back seats of cars,
Put them on mars (they wont know they need oxygen to live)

Aren’t the cheerleaders there merely to distract the oppositions side? and if so, then the concept may not work in a female side, except maybe the shot-put or hammerthrow team.

  12. Teyecoon says:

They shouldn’t get upset that there are girls who want to dress up in cute outfits to get attention and spend time finding ways to motivate the male teams and attendees. They are doing this voluntarily and if the female sports can find a bunch of lesbians who care about their athletic prowess then no one is stopping them from forming their own squad. Besides, who wants to cheerlead for any sport where the number of viewers is actually less than the number of players.

  13. AB CD says:

And this is Bush’s fault? His administration has actually trolled back some of the Title 9 extremes.
