Japanese fishing trawler sunk by giant jellyfish – Telegraph — I, for one, welcome our new jellyfish overlords.

A 10-ton fishing boat has been sunk by gigantic jellyfish off eastern Japan.

The trawler, the Diasan Shinsho-maru, capsized off Chiba`as its three-man crew was trying to haul in a net containing dozens of huge Nomura’s jellyfish.

Each of the jellyfish can weigh up to 200 kg and waters around Japan have been inundated with the creatures this year. Experts believe weather and water conditions in the breeding grounds, off the coast of China, have been ideal for the jellyfish in recent months.

The crew of the fishing boat was thrown into the sea when the vessel capsized, but the three men were rescued by another trawler, according to the Mainichi newspaper. The local Coast Guard office reported that the weather was clear and the sea was calm at the time of the accident.

One of the largest jellyfish in the world, the species can grow up to 2 meters in diameter. The last time Japan was invaded on a similar scale, in the summer of 2005, the jellyfish damaged nets, rendered fish inedible with their toxic stings and even caused injuries to fishermen.

That jellyfish is really big. I believe it can damage something. Little jellyfish can damage, so how about those big ones?

  3. deowll says:

They all have stinging cells. How much damage they do a human varies from fatal to barely noticeable. Get these things in a net with food fish and the food fish aren’t fit to eat.

Polution/firtilizer run off from China may be causing the jellyfish blooms as well as warmer waters at some locations but warmer water temps seem to help some kinds of jellyfish and harm others.

The data claims that fish stocks are only 10% of what they once were and that means a lot more baby jellyfish are living to grow up.

Due to fast reproduction among prolificly spawning fish, low population isn’t hurting total fish catch much though it looks like some slower growing and longer lived species might be on the verge of extinction.

So the lesson is that playing with 400 lb jellyfish can lead to problems… I think I can go along with that.

Any dead people? That’s all I wanna know. Save the fishes! 🙂

Thanks Chris for stating the obvious and giving me the best laugh I have had all week.

When I was in aircrew school in Pensacola, we did a part of our air crew water survival in the bay during spring. I should have known we were in for trouble when they gave us all duct tape. And told us to wrap our necks wrists and ankles. Hoping to keep them out of our flight suits. No dice

When we got back to the dock, they were waiting with gallons and gallons of vinegar. Ever had a vinegar shower?

And these were little stinging jelly fish. F’in miserable stings.

Actually jellyfish are the sole cause of global warming and the science is rarely reported. Speaking of matters of the sea, has Gore jumped ship yet? He’s heading for an iceberg full steam ahead. Why don’t people like him ever learn anything about how history constantly repeats repeats itself.

Spongebob and Patrick could have handled this 400 lb jellyfish. Of course Squidward would get all stung and stuff.

Mothra is a Btch. Godzilla will fry his furry behind in a second. And while he’s at it, he’ll rape and burn those two little btches singing all the time too.

Absolutely love Godzilla but really hate that damn wimpy, lame-looking moth.

  18. hhopper says:

Sounds to me like the crew capsized the ship… not the jellyfish.

Its a grey area. Jellyfish are known to be sneaky buggers and may have massed for an attack upon the unsuspecting seamen. 😉

  20. Greg Allen says:

It seems like the crew of that 10 ton fishing boat where pretty stupid. Didn’t they have a clue how heave the net was?

Regardless, I’d like to see those really large ones. I just love looking at jellyfish. Partly because of my infatuation, I’ve been stung a bunch of times by them and respect how serious the sting can be.

The Gods offer clues about the ownershit group. Not having any blacks working in-house was a clue not only did these proprietors have a family history against blacks but they also have a personal history in a prior life!!! Also, the “romance” event was a clue they are preditory on women as well.
