‘Prepare for war,’ Chavez warns Venezuelan military, populace – The Raw Story — It’s clear that the pretence of the wars on drugs and terror could be setting the stage for war in the region. Is Chavez right to be worried about an impending war with the US or is this an Orwellian exercise in managing the Venezuelan people?

The leader of the fifth-largest oil exporter in the world is warning his country’s military and citizenry to prepare for war with Colombia and the United States, according to published reports.

Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez issued his warning during a weekly radio address.

“Let’s not waste a day on our main aim: to prepare for war and to help the people prepare for war, because it is everyone’s responsibility,” he reportedly said.

Chavez has repeatedly voiced deep fears of US encroachment in the region.

“Students, revolutionaries, workers, women: all are ready to defend this sacred homeland called Venezuela,” he continued, adding that the best way to “avoid war is to prepare for it”.

The U.S. already tried to help a coup to overthrow him, so I can understand why he’d be paranoid. Tsk, these banana republic dictators can be such a bother when they go off the plantation…

  2. Ah_Yea says:

This is a textbook tactic for preparing to go to war.

“We must arm ourselves in case we are attacked!” very quickly becomes –
“We must strike them first before they strike us!”

Since Chavez was discovered fighting a proxy war with Colombia through FARC, what other options does he have?

  3. AdmFubar says:

yeah hugo, arm your people so they can shoot you!! 😛
that would be an epic fail for him

  4. Improbus says:

You will kneel before ZodObamaGod. Seriously, he has more to fear from the oil corporations than Obama. I am surprised he still draws air.

  5. Lou Minatti says:

    I call him Melonhead.

  6. chris says:

There’s a lot of screwy stuff going on around the world, I’m guessing Chavez is making noise to keep the wolves away.

Equities markets and the price of oil aren’t supported by logic at the moment, as I read it. If US, Japanese or Chinese stocks take a tumble oil ought to follow them down. Flight back to the dollar, if it happens, will push oil down further. There is just too much supply and not enough demand.

If oil falls too far somebody will hit an oil producer, likely Iran or Venezuela, to drive the price back up.

Chavez would rather not get hit, so he’s puffing himself up.

No need to hide your feelings… if Chavez was in the same room as you, you would be down on your knee pads…

  8. Hmeyers says:

Dictatorships and police states always require an external enemy as justification for totalitarian measures.

Plus it provides a great distraction!

  9. Dallas says:

Tell Hippo face that the Dallas police and fire department will go over there and kick his ass over the weekend.

Hugo is merely stirring up his sheep when things are shitty – steeling a page from the Republican Party over here.

  10. jescott418 says:

Can the US even fight another war? We seem to be running out of people to fight wars. Too many places we are stationed to keep the peace for other countries. Korea, Iraq, Afghanistan, US, Etc, Etc. Will have to bring the draft back to build up forces. The other question is can we afford it?

  11. Dallas says:

#13 I agree we need to bring back the draft. You will see wars decline because the republicans will fear junior might have to drop clarinet lessons and have to serve.

Kind of like ‘fear’ turned the other way.

  12. Get a Job says:

    A nutcase
Imagine if Venezuela did not have oil or the world did not need oil at all
    What a good idea

  13. fernando says:

#8 – Who exactly are his “handlers”? is it the proverbial “they”? or someone specific?

My wife is Venezuelan so I have a somewhat direct link to this. Hugo is just posturing, like #11 said. He just uses these kinds of imagined “threats” while taking away civil rights one at a time.

  14. joe who got drafted says:

    #12 and 14 Dallas
“You will see wars decline because the republicans will fear junior might have to drop clarinet lessons and have to serve. ”

HA ha, sure just like Vietnam, when there were so many exemptions for so many rich kids and anybody with connections (Texas Air National Gaurd, anyone?).

“Tell Hippo face that the Dallas police and fire department will go over there and kick his ass over the weekend.”

They will have to do it all on Saturday, unless the Cowboys have a bye week, they wouldn’t want to miss the game!

  15. Rick Cain says:

Not the first time American meddling has caused problems. Colombia has been engaged in numerous border disputes and even outright wars such as with Ecuador. We militarize a state and wonder why it attacks its neighbors.
