Revealed: the man who killed 10,000 dogs – Sunday Times – Times Online

For the past 15 years David Smith, a builders’ merchant, has been killing healthy greyhounds no longer considered by their trainers to be fast enough to race. He buries them in a one-acre plot at the back of his home in Seaham, Co Durham.

Last week The Sunday Times covertly filmed Smith on two consecutive days receiving greyhounds from trainers before killing them with a bolt gun, dumping them in the plot and covering over the “graves” using a mechanical digger.

He told an undercover reporter it took him three years to fill the field, at which point he simply started all over again. “Within a year the bodies have gone,” said Smith. “It takes me about three years to get across there and by the time I get there I can start back here again and there are only a few bones left.”

According to Sunday Times calculations and testimony of two racing insiders, it is conservatively estimated Smith has killed at least 10,000 dogs.

Once again proving that the British hate dogs.

Speaking of cruelty: how about the industry that breeds certain kinds of dogs, even when those dogs are genetically predisposed to live miserable lives because of the traits of their breed… english bulldogs come to mind.

  2. Don says:

There was at least one similar incident in Arizona several years back. Dozens of dead Greyhounds piled in the desert. This prompted an adopt-a-greyhound campaign which, it appears, is still going strong:

I don’t think anybody was slagging the British.

I think those who mistreat animals should be shot espeacially puppy kickers

    “Oh no, the poor doggies!”

These are racing dogs, not cute pets. If you eat beef or wear leather shoes, and you think that killing dogs is an outrage, you might want to take a moment to look up the word “hypocrisy”.

  6. Angel H. Wong says:

He should have sold them to Taco Bell.

and #10 Hypocrisy runs both ways, Peta is well known to kill animals just because they deem those who don’t join their ranks as worthy of taking care of the poor doggies.

I don’t agree. One is for survival in which you “technically” offer a farm animal protection from (other) predators for it’s food potential later. [Of course, the real world of factory farms makes other predators look like the preferred option.] On the other hand, greyhounds and Circus’s are exploiting living creatures for nothing more than selfish profit that enlists the animals into a short and inhumane way of life with no benefits of retirement for their miserable life’s hard work.

In summary, killing for survival is justified by necessity but when you do it for exploitation money then it’s just cruel.

  9. A lady down the street has two (maybe three) greyhounds she rescued. They are very sweet animals.

  10. Richard Talbot says:

It’s easy to get rid of unwanted dogs in Virginia….just leave them on PETA’s doorstep. Like the man in this story, PETA has killed tens of thousands of healthy animals. Even puppies and kittens. Before PETA was caught in the act…they even had curbside service.

Kind of makes you wonder why anyone would call them an “animal rights” organization, doesn’t it?

#10…..cute pets or not, you might feel differently if your employer bolted you in the head when you became redundent.

  12. ECA says:

Hores, dogs, rabbits, and many others,
Are killed yearly, as GAME animals.

do I need to get into MINK farming, gator farming, fox and others??

Do I EVEn have to suggest that there are 1,000,000 of EACH, Dogs and CATS, born every year, that will NEVEr have a home?? How many can you AFFORD to feed, neutar, and maintain??

ALL I can say, is to bad we cant do it to humans..

Iv suggested for years, that we should release wild cattle and sheep and goats into the areas, that need to be Cropped of under brush.
REPLACE the wild we have killed off. Give us something that can be replenished, BEFORE its to late. Even mexico and south america does it already.

  13. Vic says:

He deserves to be buried in that damn field, And experience his frickn bolt gone, If I ever go to britan I thing ill look him up.

  14. Pete says:

Ex-racing greyhounds make wonderful pets – they are quite shy and gentle dogs, lovely around children. They also keep you extremely healthy as an owner – try taking a greyhound for a walk, you’ll be doing a lot of running 🙂

  15. ECA says:

    And thats just 1 breed.
AS I mentioned, there are millions of dogs and cats, born every year, into the wild, and abusive conditions.
Do I have to mention Animal farming, and OVERERT dog breedings.

  16. Angel H. Wong says:

    ECA:

Let’s just turn them all into hot dogs, with all the preservatives no one will notice the difference.

Quite to the contrary, most circus animals are very well treated. Their trainers depend upon the animal for their living. You don’t hurt your meal ticket if you’re smart. Also, a happy animal is much easier to train and will respond better then a poorly kept animal.
