At least this guy has his belt fastened

Drivers of SUVs and 4x4s are more likely to talk on their mobile phones and fail to wear a seatbelt, according to research by Imperial College, London.

Reinforcing the popular stereotype that those who drive large SUVs in cities are selfish and unconcerned for the safety of others, this research – published this week in the British Medical Journal – has been gleefully received by anti-SUV campaigners and their supporters.

The research team watched 41,000 passenger vehicles passing through three different points in Hammersmith, West London over a two-week period. Of the 3,000 4x4s spotted, 8.2% of the drivers were using mobile phones, compared to just 2% of the drivers of other vehicles. One in six drivers was not wearing a seatbelt, with 4×4 drivers 26 times more likely to fail to belt up.

It can get worse, of course. In Santa Fe, the folks described above are ten times more likely to be realtors.

My observations are that everyone talks on their cell phone while driving, SUV or not.

Whi cares if people aren’t wearing their seat belts? That should be up to the drivers. They should be looking at how well people are driving, but I guess using a cell phone probably means less careful driving.

SUVs have a reputation of only being a problem for the other guy. So having the drivers not wear their seat belts might make them drive a little more carefully. With their seat belts on, they’ll feel like nothing can stop them, and cause more accidents. My guess is the real reason for this is that people who can afford SUVs are more likely to afford cell phones.

I’M A CRIMINAL! ARRRRRGGGGGHHH! Watch out, ye fellow drivers! I’m rude and don’t protect myself. Be careful, or I’ll hurt myself! You fools, I don’t brush my teeth or get 8 hours of sleep every night, either.

Arrrrrgghhh! I’m a lawbreaking b*****d who refuses to protect himself for the good of society. After all, I don’t own my body, right? The government owns my body and all my possessions!

  4. Improbus says:

When you are driving you just have to assume everyone around you is stupid. Keep that in mind and pay attention you should be ok … unless you get rear ended.

  5. mack says:

I wish i could punch every driver in the nose who talks on their cell phone when they drive. They pay absolutely no attention to the road and drive slowly. Sometimes i feel like ramming them with my truck just to make an example, but then again these scum aren’t worth my jail time and money.

  7. Lou says:

As a libertarian, I have no problem with the not seatbelt attitude, but to be fair, tell your insurance company that you don’t wear a seatbelt.

There is NO reason I have to pay for your libertarian rights to get injured.

  8. Improbus says:

People that do not wear helmets, protective gear or seat belts are fools and sooner or later will be removed from the gene pool.
