SO a bunch of kids roaming around, dressed up goofy and asking for candy is some devil-worshipping thing, eh? Puh-leeeze. If anything, it mocks these superstitions.

“It’s a day for the good Lord, not for the devil,” said Barbara Braswell, who plans to send her 4-year-old granddaughter Maliyah out trick-or-treating in a princess costume on Saturday instead.

Some towns around the country are decreeing that Halloween be celebrated on Saturday to avoid complaints from those who might be offended by the sight of demons and witches ringing their doorbell on the Sabbath. Others insist the holiday should be celebrated on Oct. 31 no matter what.

This reminds me of last halloween, when my wife and I were shopping in a local store, and overheard a woman telling her two children that they couldn’t wear any costumes related to Harry Potter – not because he was a “bad person”, but because he did some “bad” things. 🙁

This is actually a very pervasive theme in the Bible belt. You will know a person for years and never notice anything odd, then one day they will get all excited and start telling you how evil Halloween is. They’ll give you a tract explaining why, and nowadays some web links.
It’s what happens when one makes the fateful decision to become a literalist.
Of course, a child in a devil’s costume is just a child in a devil’s costume, but to a literalist, that child is walking a very fine line. It’s a lot like watching the feds define suspicious terrorist activity….
[But the people who believe that Halloween is evil are often nice and, believe it or not, quite sane individuals; whereas the feds, well, that’s another matter.]
