Over the past 24 hours there has been a marked increase in total spam sent to comment boxes. This is in the thousands and it makes moderation tedius. To knock back this increase on the Dvorak Uncensored blog I’ve installed Spam Karma but need to fine tune it to the nature of my readers. If you are concerned (and already follow the posting guidelines) please let us know on the forum here by clicking here.

I’m sorry but to post on the forum you do have to register. And registration is something that I am trying to avoid on the blog.

For Word Press users you should all install Spam Karma. Go here.

And for bloggers who long since installed Spam Karma and previously advised me to use it I should mention that due to config problems it never worked until I upgraded to WP2.

I would also suggest looking into Akismet WordPress.com uses it for it’s hosted sites and it really works well.

  2. Milo says:

It’s not justy comment boxes. My Gmail account has been getting considerably more spam this week. That’s still only a couple per day but compared to a couple per week that’s quite an increase.

  3. Apparently Yahoo is getting a tonnage too. I attribute this to the summer vacation when a lot of computing power becomes available. I suspect this will continue for a few months.

  4. Eideard says:

I was getting a little grumpy about my gmail account — going from zero spam to 3-5/day. Then, I looked at my spam box — and their filter had dumped a couple hundred in there in a week.

Thanks to John for installing the new filter. This morning I manually removed over 1,000 spam “comments” — before Spam Karma. And the new software has an accumulator that hangs onto the most recent stuff it removes so we can check to see if everyone’s words of wisdom made it through.

  5. Johnny-Cakes says:

Whoa whoa whoa…back the truck up John. You’ve stated repeatedly that you don’t get any spam here at dvorak.org/blog. Is it because you’ve stated so many times you don’t get it that now perhaps the spammers are targeting you specifically? Or has dvorak.org/blog in fact not been sullied with spam yet and you’re doing this out of courtesy?

If being courteous, thank you so very much. If it’s because you’ve been spammed….mwhahahahaha!

(Also, if you have been spammed, please take down the “I get no spam” sign. Or at least put up a sign with “0 days without a spam incident”…….or do neither, as it is your website)

  6. Uncle Dave says:

I have a Yahoo account that I use for a couple of things. Everything else goes to the spam folder which, on average, is about 200 per day. My regular email account (associated with my website) only gets a few a week, although this week, there’s been a marked increase.

  7. Leonard says:

I have noticed a ~50% increase in spam on my earthlink email accounts the last week. thought it was just me. gmail has either not gone up, or just a little. Something going on here.

  8. Hey Cakes…I never said I get no blog spam..it’s email spam that I have eliminated. Click on the GET NO SPAM logo.

  9. No follow is not recommended if you want to be fully indexed. Spam Karma, which I just installed about 17 hours ago totally kicks ass. It’s knocked out 1700 pieces of spam already. It’s amazing. The coder needs some serious accolades. It’s almost hasrd to believe.
