Sony on Tuesday finally took the wraps off the much-rumored PS3 Slim and gave it the more affordable $299 price tag consumers have been clamoring for.

Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Kaz Hirai performed the unveiling at a press conference in Cologne, Germany, preceding the opening of the Gamescom Expo. He took the stage and announced the PS3 was “getting a new model” and that, indeed, it was called the PS3 Slim.

The PS3 Slim is powered by a new 45nm version of the Cell processor, which runs at the same speed as the 60nm processor in the “old” PS3 but is smaller and more energy efficient. According to company reps, power consumption for the Slim has also been cut to two-thirds, “helping to reduce fan noise,” which is important.

    It’s about time.

  2. B.Dog says:

It doesn’t have the ability to run Linux, like the old model, which is also now $299. The PS3 was $249 (after rebate) for a few months last winter.

  3. Angel H. Wong says:

Reducing fan noise for the PS3? I thought the Wii already did that *bada-dum*

Already pre-ordered one, been waiting for this for a long time.

Same size as the excellent Panasonic BD60 but $100 more expensive. What percentage of people will buy these, just for the blu-ray playback?

    No, it’s about fucking time!

  9. ArianeB says:

Maybe people will stop buying Wii’s now.

The truth is, this is very tempting.

Why it will be $299 in the US and 299Euros in Europe, although the Euro is almost 1,41 dollars.
Maybe I can find a friend that can mail me one…

  12. Miguel says:

Reminds me of those old skool 80’s and 90’s videogame consoles, like maybe the Sega Genesis (Megadrive in Europe)… The design isn’t so innovative, and it isn’t that smaller, like the PS2slim was relatively to the PS2. I was expecting more, and a better design than the hideously ugly PS3…

  13. Ron Larson says:

#12 “…Ask the EU why they allow their citizens to be charged more. I bet you a lot of that “differential” goes to the goverments, both locals & EU…”

Exactly. Because in Europe (and other nations), the sales tax is already included in the price. In the US, the sales tax is added on at checkout. The way we do it in the US pisses of my Aussie friends when they come over here. It makes them feel like they are getting ripped off.

When I try to explain to them that we don’t have a national sales tax (most counties call them VAT’s), and that the rate varies from town to town. They find that unbeleiveable.
