If you planned to check out a library book, visit a city clinic or have your garbage picked up on Monday, you’re out of luck.

The City of Chicago will basically be closed for business on Aug. 17, a reduced-service day in which most city employees are off without pay, according to a release from the Office of Budget and Management. City Hall, public libraries, health clinics and most city offices will be closed.

That seems like a very good way to cut down expenses — just shut down operations for a day.

    A little less corruption!

Now if they could stay closed Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday…

  2. Rick Cain says:

I’m sure private industry will come in and help the public out in the meantime, har har!

  3. Awake says:

California has been doing that for a while, cutting two workdays out of the month, and nobody seems to have noticed.

  4. Guilherme Cherman says:

    #1, Friday too.

#3, didn’t know about that. California is screwed up anyway.

    ding..ding..ding..!

premature ejaculation by the chicago fraudsters. (who by extension, have infiltrated the higher levels of of the current government.)

me thinks they wanted to throw off whole august 22, 26, and Sept 7th
predictions of bank holidays and other possible government sponsored mayhem to kick off the military buildup (in jersey city) here on
    the east coast. -woohoo.

As much as I hate to say it, I agree with you regarding getting rid of middle management bloat.

  7. Faxon says:

“Most city employees” obviously will NOT include any ELECTED officials, since they cannot POSSIBLY endure a reduction in pay…

  8. Faxon says:

#6 No, of course they can’t possibly reduce the size of government. Are you kidding??? So much better to make the people suffer every way they can, to convince them they have to pay more taxes, and fund more government to help them with all of their problems, including lack of government.

  9. deowll says:

    I think this is trend.

  10. Jared says:

@Awake Read the Sac Bee and you will see everyone whines about state offices being closed three Fridays a month.

  11. Bob says:

This seems to be happening in several major cities. And while I agree with many that getting rid of allot of the middle managers and redundant positions would be the way to go, you are forgetting one thing. All these workers are Union members, and most likely under collective bargaining agreements, that basically say the city can’t just go around getting rid of people without the unions permission.

That and the mob would probably put a hit on them.

    # 11 Jared said,
“@Awake Read the Sac Bee and you will see everyone whines about state offices being closed three Fridays a month.”

Everyone who works for the state and the people who need state services are whining. Most ordinary people have not noticed any difference.

  13. jpd says:

Michigan’s been doing the same thing for quite awhile too.

  14. Bastian says:

I live in Chicago… believe me, we won’t miss a thing.

  15. Uncle Patso says:

Cities and states all over the country are having to make some serious cutbacks — the recession has cut deeply into tax revenues and everyone is having to make do with less. Many are trying this and similar variations — it’s cheaper and easier than massive layoffs. I’d rather take a 7% to 14% cut in pay than lose a job entirely.

  16. chuck says:

I know Congress is on “vacation” but they still cost us money. So how about we save a little cash and shut down the D.C. government every August?

  17. Mr Diesel says:

Why the hell couldn’t they have shut down Chicago and Illinois BEFORE the Messiah got voted in.
