Yeah, I admit it. I posted this only because of the headline. Ain’t English a grand language?

A 55-year-old resident of Peculiar died today in an accidental shooting.

Investigators believe that Dennis Holcomb accidentally shot himself while target shooting alone, said Cass County Sheriff’s Corporal Kevin Tieman.

A relative found Holcomb with a single gunshot wound in his leg in the 13000 block of 223rd Street and called for help about 5:20 p.m. Holcomb was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Yes, I would say that was a peculiar shooting.

  2. bobbo, not a medical expert says:

On these limited facts, why does this guy die with medical help relatively near and assumed a quick response? No clotting factor and bled out? Air embolism? Stroke on artery getting clogged?

Meanwhile I still am amazed at that teenage girl who had both arms cut off above the elbows and left for dead. She walks until she find help and recovers.

Two to the chest, one to the head.

  3. civengine says:

Been there. MO has a Useful as well. They have a Useful Cemetery on Hwy 50 near Jefferson City.

  4. Tallon says:

Bobbo, what would lead you to assume a quick response? The blurb here says the relative who discovered him called for help. Clearly it was far too late by then.

  5. ECA says:

I looked this place up on the map..
I will say that it is over 10 miles OUT OF THE CITY..

  6. ECA says:

    oops,
Looked again.. on the out skirts.

  7. Dale says:

Been there too. Odd place. If that address isn’t a typo, 13000 would be in the sticks about a hundred blocks from town.

You could do a whole blog on place/town names in America. My faves in my home state of Missouri are “Licking”, “Climax Springs” and “Tightwad” we also have a Peculiar too by the way.

  9. Animby says:

Passed thru this town long ago. The sign must be even older as the population is about 10 times that now. “”Peculiar received its name in 1868 when the first postmaster, Edgar Thomson, had his first choice, Excelsior, rejected … [he] wrote to the Postmaster General himself to complain saying, among other things, “We don’t care what name you give us so long as it is sort of ‘peculiar'”…[Wikipedia]

My favorite town name, though, is still Surprise! in Az.

#8: I’m guessing the car in the background indicates when the photo was taken.

  11. Syrinx says:

    #9 Uncle Dave,

LOL! I guess a picture is not worth a thousand words to some people.

  12. Sound of Silence says:

Richard Corey was a peculiar man…

  13. Mojo Yugen says:

I went to college near there. The story I always heard about the name was the Postmaster said the town needed to have a name before it could get a post office and the name should be something strange or peculiar. The residents didn’t like the name “Strange” so…

Geeze, what would happen if you guys ever visited Dildo?

Well, Fusion: Try Fucking in Austria! No really, try it… No? Then read about it.

Do a news search and find out how they’ve had to install cameras to keep tourists from stealing their signage!

  16. Mr. Fusion says:

    #14, Animby,

True story. My wife wanted to honeymoon in Climax MI.

    😛

  17. Animby says:

Mr Fusion. Did you refuse that poor woman a honeymoon Climax? Did she send you to Hell, MI? Or did you just end up with Blue Balls in PA?

  18. Peculiar Walker says:

I happen to be from Peculiar. This shooting probably happened several hours earlier and the man was not found until many hours later by the family member after he did not return home.
That evening there were several gun shots fired. As this is a common accurance out here, no one would think anything strange about this ,though I and at least one other did stand on the porch wondering what all the shots were about, it is not unusual to hear gun shots out here it is still considered country. We had figured illigal hunting or even the possability of car backfire, until hearing about this the following day. Most likely this man was trying to get attention by firing into the air several times.

No, 223rd. street is not in the boonies at all. This location is only one mile from 71 highway and town, walking distance to the local Flying J. Hospitals located within ten miles North and South.
This was a simple tragedy of someone choosing to shoot a gun while alone. Not knowing this man nor his family I can only assume the police looked into the possibility of, “another being with him or coming upon him.”

Also; Animby has the closest tale to the origin of the Peculiar name. Peculiar came after several suggested names were turned down as they were already taken. “A Peculiar name was asked for and that is what was given.”
