Christians Take the Bait, Go into Snit, Help Promote Madonna
The Church of England has criticised Madonna’s appearance on a cross to kick off her latest tour in Los Angeles.
“Why would someone with so much talent seem to feel the need to promote herself by offending so many people?” said the church in a statement.
Madonna performed the ballad Live To Tell while suspended from a giant mirrored cross on the opening night.
David Muir of the Evangelical Alliance also accused the singer of “blatant insensitivity”.
“Madonna’s use of Christian imagery is an abuse and it is dangerous,” he said.
Dangerous?? How?? Is the church afraid that Christians are going to trip over this, fall, and hurt their feelings?
I really couldn’t give a rip about Madonna, her performances, or her music. But what always amazes me about these stories is how people line up to play the part of Charlie Brown ready to kick Lucy’s football, again and again and again. Don’t they realize that they are doing promotional work for her?
You could profit from their stupidity as well I’m sure 🙂
Easy publicity, and Christians are safe to bait. If Madonna were brave, she’d use an image of Muhammed.

If those artists like Sinead O’Conner or that PissChrist guy REALLY had guts, they mock the Muslims!
Have you ever worked or lived with someone passionate about their faith? Often these people define themselves in terms of their faith. To them it’s a personal attack, and their reactions can be very dangerous. It was only a few centuries ago that Christian authorities were burning blasphemers at the stake. I don’t think anyone believes that the human brain has evolved into a higher form in that short of time. I guess I have the right to walk into a redneck bar in flaming drag. When and if I wake up in intensive care, who do I blame?

Wow…how is this any different then the typical Madonna of the 90s? She’s always managed to push the envelope and offend people along the way. This is type of publicity her image has thrived on.
Perhaps the organizations and groups offended by her actions should take a different approach and not cry foul to the mass media and public. By them ignoring her, it’s the worst thing they can do to her controversial appeal. It’s interesting that the people that are offended continue to take the same approach repeatedly, as if this particular time it’ll be a different outcome.

I agree totally. Madonna’s primary talent is in spotting trends and exploiting them. By all rights she should be as irrelevant as, say, Cher, but she keeps hanging on because of her talent for keeping her name in front of the public. These protests are self-defeating and I wonder why they never learn.

I agree with GregAllen. People who do this are doing it against Christians because it is safe and profitable. (and I do find it offensive to purposely try to make money by mocking the religion of another.) Of course it’s not just religion. Imagine if someone were mocking anything you held as sacred, or important. You would find it offensive as well.

Pushing the envelope? If she really wanted to push the envelope, she should have done the Mapplethorpe exhibit and stuck herself and her electric cross in a vat of yellow liquid. One show – good bye!

You see, Christians will lose either way. If we sit back and say nothing, people will assume that such actions are okay, and that we don’t really care. And if we fuss about them, we draw attention to them and encourage them to continue.
Since Christianity has already come under attack lately via the Da Vinci Code, Madonna is just captilizing on that controversy in order to boost her own sales. She is using Christians to sell to non-Christians.
Maybe some of you don’t understand what it means for something to be sacred or dear to you, but if you do then you would realize the dilemma we are in. A greedy woman with no scruples is using the death of the person who you adore more than all else as a way to sell records. To put it into perspective, suppose she was reenacting the death of one of your loved ones to do this.
