WASHINGTON (CNN) — The U.S. military wants to establish regional teams of military personnel to assist civilian authorities in the event of a significant outbreak of the H1N1 virus this fall, according to Defense Department officials.

The proposal is awaiting final approval from Defense Secretary Robert Gates. The officials would not be identified because the proposal from U.S. Northern Command’s Gen. Victor Renuart has not been approved by the secretary.

The plan calls for military task forces to work in conjunction with the Federal Emergency Management Agency. There is no final decision on how the military effort would be manned, but one source said it would likely include personnel from all branches of the military. It has yet to be determined how many troops would be needed and whether they would come from the active duty or the National Guard and Reserve forces.

Civilian authorities would lead any relief efforts in the event of a major outbreak, the official said. The military, as they would for a natural disaster or other significant emergency situation, could provide support and fulfill any tasks that civilian authorities could not, such as air transport or testing of large numbers of viral samples from infected patients.

Man, this just gets better and better.

  4. Todd Peterson says:

This is a clear violation of out Constitution! People – wake up!!!

  5. chuck says:

The only people who seem to be hysterical about the swine flu are WHO and FEMA. Maybe they should be locked into their own camps.

  6. RTaylor says:

The government and virologists aren’t telling you everything. The actual death numbers are being withheld to prevent panic. Certain metropolitan areas may need to be sterilized by nuclear weapons. Also the victims are somehow reanimated into the walking dead. The virus was manufactured to get rid of fat people to save the government healthcare dollars, but it backfired. Please feel free to add to this so we can purge this blog of flu posts.

Thanks RTaylor, I shall update my zombie plan accordingly. Bow Chicka Bow Wow.

  8. David says:

We already have a military that takes care of these kinds of things – the National Guard. They respond to civil problems. Not sure why we need anything new.

FEMA will need them handy, apocalypse is imminent. Your government will guarantee an orderly disaster, by military force. Anybody else think this is a bad idea? The most heavily armed citizenry on the planet and you’re planning on pointing guns at them when they’re scared. All hell is going to break loose and they know it, that’s why they’re taking advantage of the swine flu situation. Boys and girls it’s gonna be a bad one, but then it’s going to get worse.

The paranoia is so thick here I could cut it with a knife and have it as a snack.

  14. Uncle Don says:

Don’t expect local military units in your area to be deployed locally.

In order to “contain” any outbreak, they’ll be sent elsewhere so that loved ones aren’t problematic to any particular local soldier.

Can somebody please tell me what the big deal is about swine flu? I thought it was far less severe and far less fatal than seasonal influenza.
At least tens of thousands of people die every year in the U.S. alone because of seasonal influenza–yet there has only been little over 300 deaths in the U.S. because of H1N1.
Now, don’t get me wrong. I am not saying that any death is anything to take light of, however, I am certain that if our media reported on every death caused by the seasonal flu we’d have an entire 24/7 network dedicated just to those stories. And yet that is what we did in the early stages of the swine flu: report on every death caused by it.
Even if there is a “significant” swine flu outbreak this fall, how “significant” will it be? If our government is ignorant enough to assemble a military task squad for something that probably will not happen, I fear that our United States government will be the end of me, not swine flu.
I find it ridiculous that large media networks waste their money “reporting” on this crap.

Go get yourself infected and tell us all first hand. It’s the BEST way to understand the situation. Come back and tell us how it went, if you are still living that is. We’re all fcking idiots posting here so don’t believe anything. First hand experience is the key. Good luck and cheers!

It is. It’s just that the seasonal influenza kill off the old, weak, and useless, whereas the swine flue has proven to hit the young’uns quite hard — you know, those who have years of tax-paying goodness in front of them 😉

  19. Rick's Cafe says:

Don’t ya just love how this government is working so very hard to force a conflict among it’s own citizens.

This use to be a country of peaceful, lovable people. Just wait until the 1st soldier gets killed and see what happens.

Guess the real question is who’s going to make the profit during the turmoil?

  20. deowll says:

I think they just want to practice for a biological warfare attack.

  21. Two to the Head says:

I have seen military (I’m assuming National Guard) troops “helping out with crowd control at local summer celebrations this year for the first time. It is very disturbing.

  23. SB says:

And I meant that comment with disdain, what does that photo have to do with your story???

  24. SB says:

Not to say you are wrong by using it, but criticism is the catalyst to getting to the truth.
