The Associated Press: Airman lost legs after gallbladder surgery — Cripes this is ridiculous.

Read was flown to UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, where doctors told the family that damage from the lack of blood required amputation. Family members say he’s undergone 10 surgeries to remove dead tissue from his legs, leaving him without much of his right leg and the lower portion of his left.

And Read still hasn’t had his gallbladder removed because of the surgery complications, relatives said.

    Obamas fault?

“So why is it you don’t use the VA and Veterans Services? ”

    Oh…I don’t know…..

  5. dcphill says:

Military doctors or hospitals cannot be sued
for malpractice. This kid is in deep poo
because of a doctor’s error and hospital
inability to get him to a place where his
    legs could be saved. Hmmmm

  6. deowll says:

Please notice that this is an example of government run medical care. Are you sure this is what we really want? VA medicine doesn’t have the best reputation on Earth.

  7. AdmFubar says:

#6 no that is military medical care… and they really dont…

certainly no hawkeye or bj honeycut…

  8. Rick's Cafe says:

Under the proposed plan that ‘just has to get passed’ in the next week or so, it probably won’t be deemed cost efficient to put any more effort in ‘fixing’ this patient.

…bureaucrats won’t look at the “why” the patient is there, only “how much” it’s going to cost to fix the patient – cause that’s all their boss will look at.
    *******
Noticed the ‘usual suspects’ aren’t on this particular post spouting their mantra of how government is going to fix everything.

  9. Lou says:

I don’t remember that happing in Canada.

  10. Named says:

    9 Lou,

    ZING!

I’m impressed with the insurance agents showing up in the blog and posting how this is exactly how single payer health care is under every case.

And the other half of the insurance agents are lamenting the fact that this poor soldier can’t sue for money.

    What a country!

  11. A. N. Other says:

I noticed that this happened at a government-run hospital. Do we really want these guys controlling all the medical care in the USA?

  12. StoopidFlanders says:

Free, universal, always available, guaranteed health care …What’s the catch?: Sometimes you wake up with NO LEGS! You don’t see stories like this in Canada, because up here, he just would’ve died on the wait list; and that doesn’t make for snazzy headlines.

  13. Mr. Fusion says:

As unfortunate as this is, it is a fairly common occurrence. Shit can and too often does happen during a surgery. This ended up being one of the more serious injuries.

While true, he can not sue military physicians, care, or hospitals, he will be discharged with a full pension along with rehabilitation services and orthopedics. Maybe not as good as suing for $10,000,000, but adequate.

    #6, deowll,

Please notice that this is an example of government run medical care. Are you sure this is what we really want? VA medicine doesn’t have the best reputation on Earth.

No, this is not an example of government run medical care. It is an example of a surgery that went wrong.

This wasn’t done at a VA facility. It was on a military base in a military clinic. AND, the VA had a great reputation until the Republicans started ruining it 8 years ago.

When the surgeon realized the situation was beyond his control, he immediately took steps to transfer the patient to a top notch facility that could care for him. This type of surgery is often done on out-patient basis or at low level facilities.

Somehow I don’t think the truth matters to you though.

  15. just horrific. Absolutely terrible

  16. Somebody_Else says:

    Very sad story, poor guy.

On the upside, he won’t ever have to work again if he doesn’t want to…

  17. GigG says:

“… the VA had a great reputation until the Republicans started ruining it 8 years ago.”

Like hell they did! It may seem that way but VA hospitals only get any press when we have war or warettes going on.

  18. Mr Diesel says:

“… the VA had a great reputation until the Republicans started ruining it 8 years ago.”

That has to be the joke of the day. I live one mile from a major VA hospital and in the last 35 years that I care about it is the last place you would ever want to go. It is more like something out of a grade “b” horror movie.

One reason why I never went there (for treatment).

It isn’t a Rep or Dem problem, it is a government health provider problem. Just like the anointed one (you know, our God Obomba) wants to shove down everyone’s throat.

Really? I’ve known people in the VA way prior to this supposed ruining and it wasn’t in good shape then (certainly no “great reputation”). Nice try, though.

To the pro private insurance types and anti-American troops crowd,

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Single-payer_health_care#Types_and_variations

In a peer-reviewed paper published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, researchers of the RAND Corp. reported that the quality of care received by Veterans Administration patients scored significantly higher overall than did comparable metrics for patients in the rest of the U.S. health system.[9]

    http://ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15611491
    (from the study)

Patients from the VHA scored significantly higher for adjusted overall quality (67% vs. 51%; difference, 16 percentage points [95% CI, 14 to 18 percentage points]),

chronic disease care (72% vs. 59%; difference, 13 percentage points [CI, 10 to 17 percentage points]),

and preventive care (64% vs. 44%; difference, 20 percentage points [CI, 12 to 28 percentage points]),

  21. Mr. Fusion says:

Why do the right wing nuts hate America so much?

.. he will be discharged with a full pension..

    Funny fact.

Too bad he doesn’t get a purple heart for his ‘war’ wounds.

If the option were available, I wonder how many Americans would voluntarily choose to go to the VA for their medical care?

Wonder what the ‘mistake rate’ would become after adding a large volume of destitute (or cheap) individual who probably aren’t healthy enough to complete an obstacle course? [military are in better physical shape and are better capable of handling body stresses]

Wonder why a ‘volunteer’ option isn’t given to the country – instead of the draconian decision to make it illegal to go outside of the system?
