Palm 700p

I currently own the Treo 650, and I had a lot of fun playing with the new Treo 700p, which Palm officially unveiled today. It’s a worthwhile upgrade and certainly the best smart phone out there right now.

Highlights include:

  • EvDO (Evolution Data Optimized) broadband capability
  • A 1.3-Megapixel camera/camcorder
  • Built-in dial-up networking via Bluetooth or USB
  • 128 MB of memory (60 MB user available)

I also like that they’e bundled software that one previlously had to obtain separately, for such things like support for PDF, Word, and Excel files.

Other improvements on the 650 include a range of nice ergonomic touches as well. For example, there are dedicated phone keys for “send” and “end”, and the ringer switch now vibrates to tell you you’ve switched your speaker off.

In all, a solid step up from the previous model.

I wish they’d still offer models with the grafitti area and no keyboard. I have a kyocera 7135 now, and will likely NOT buy another smartphone because I hate those little keyboards.

I realize that everything has to be dumbed-down for “the masses.” I just wish “the masses” weren’t so dumb.

Do you work for Palm? That post sounds almost like an ad … just because I’m not used to seeing new product reviews here.

  3. James Hill says:

… and yet, people who carry around these bricks still get laughed at.

can you make telephone calls with it.

  5. Eideard says:

Adding to joshua’s note on simplicity — and can you have a clear conversation with the damned thing?

The prime reason I use Skype is the terrific clarity — especially when using a headset and boom mike. All the hardware in the world doesn’t seem to make cell phone calls sound any better than a shortwave broadcast from the other side of the planet. I use a similar model headset/mike in the pickup — you risk getting a ticket inside city limits otherwise — but, it makes no difference.

Yes, the problem is the frequencies and the carriers. I don’t need the details. I’d just like to be able to hear what the conversation is about.
