“But I LOVE cheezburger!”

Three U.S. scientists are concerned about the potential of people contracting Creutzfeldt Jakob disease — the human form of “mad cow disease” — from eating farmed fish who are fed byproducts rendered from cows.

Mad cow disease, also called bovine spongiform encephalopathy is a fatal brain disease in cattle, which scientists believe can cause Creutzfeldt Jakob disease in humans who eat infected cow parts.

In the latest issue of the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, Dr. Robert P. Friedland, a neurologist at University of Louisville in Kentucky and colleagues suggest that farmed fish fed contaminated cow parts could transmit Creutzfeldt Jakob disease.

The scientists want government regulators to ban feeding cow meat or bone meal to fish until the safety of this common practice can be confirmed.
[…]
“We have not proven that it’s possible for fish to transmit the disease to humans. Still, we believe that out of reasonable caution for public health, the practice of feeding rendered cows to fish should be prohibited,” Friedland said in a prepared statement. “Fish do very well in the seas without eating cows,” he added.

I don’t believe this disease even exists because it’s not mentioned even once in The Bibble.

  2. Steve says:

Yuk. I have heard about these circular practices of feeding cows to chickens then feeding chickens to cows.

I guess feeding cows to fish is predictable. If a batch of fish isnt good enough for us they probably grind it with hay and make cow feed.

In addition to organic and vegan foods I might like to see one called ‘non perverted’.

  3. sargasso says:

Can a fish, that ate a cow with a disease, catch that disease, and then transmit it to a person? A better question, why is a diseased cow in the food chain?

    Business: No one died yet.
Government: Let’s wait until they do. (bought politicians speaking)

    -then when it happens

Business: You can’t prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that we are at fault.

    etc.

    Reminds me of the headline:

“MASSIVE TOXIC CHEMICAL SPILL IN RESERVOIR. GOVERNMENT SAYS WATER SAFE TO DRINK.”

  5. SparkyOne says:

Has the fda approved soylent green yet? I am sure there is lost of cash there.

  6. Greg Allen says:

Fish farming is a great idea except that many third-world fish farms are environmental disasters.

It’s great place for sustainable green technology.

  7. soundwash says:

they’re not the only ones being
    fed that prion soup crap..

  8. AdmFubar says:

why are they feeding them leftover cow bits and not fish food???

  9. green says:

Mmmm tilapia. Eats fish farm poop all day and is a hot menu item.

  12. deowll says:

#9 What the did you think they were making fish food out of: granite?

In nature the normal fate of a dead body is to be eaten. Duh!

Some animals can’t even get preons disease. Humans and cats are defective in this regard and can.

  13. Nimby says:

    What FUD!

Still, I ain’t eating DOZE fishies.

  14. ECA says:

    let me mention something..
with all the hormones and other STUFF in meat..
I KNOW of locations that feed fish from dead cattle.

In 2 years they are FULLY SIZED and still growing. Unlike nature, where it takes upto 5 years for ANYTHING to get past 18″..

  15. Barb says:

This practice of feeding MBM from cattle has got to stop!

“Even if fish could not contract a transmissible spongiform encephalopathy (TSE), disease, it would still be possible for the TSE agent to survive the digestinal tract. And then if that fish was added as an ingredient for feed, the agent could further spread to infect other species.”

And for the poster who doesn’t believe CJD even exists because it’s not in the Bible (whatever the heck that’s supposed to mean) read these two articles:

    article 1

    article 2
