Australian wallabies are eating opium poppies and creating crop circles as they hop around “as high as a kite”.

Lara Giddings, the attorney general for the island state of Tasmania, said the kangaroo-like marsupials were getting into poppy fields grown for medicine…

Australia supplies about 50% of the world’s legally-grown opium used to make morphine and other painkillers…

“The one interesting bit that I found recently in one of my briefs on the poppy industry was that we have a problem with wallabies entering poppy fields, getting as high as a kite and going around in circles,” Lara Giddings told the hearing.

Then they crash,” she added. “We see crop circles in the poppy industry from wallabies that are high.”

Rick Rockliff, a spokesman for poppy producer Tasmanian Alkaloids, said the wallaby incursions were not very common, but other animals had also been spotted in the poppy fields acting unusually.

“There have been many stories about sheep that have eaten some of the poppies after harvesting and they all walk around in circles,” he added.

Some people believe the mysterious circles that appear in fields in a number of countries are created by aliens. Unfortunately, they also vote.

No, not the aliens. The True Believers.

don’t all herbivores eat plants? What am I missing?

With all the cocaine confiscated everywhere/all the time, seems to me rather silly to grow it–even in Tasmania.

Just chemically test a large capture and use it. I just bought a bay leaf tree to harvest for bay leaves. Sad I can’t self medicate, silly too.

  2. RTaylor says:

Cocaine is derived from the coca plant. Morphine is cooked from opium.

  3. SparkyOne says:

and in my backyard it is the skunks grubbing that pose harm to my crop for self medication.

  4. bobbo, an advocate for edible landscape says:

and bay leaves are derived from bay trees (grecian type)and is cooked with just about everything.

You know its cheaper to go to a nursery and buy a bay tree and strip it of leaves than to go to the grocery store and buy a few leaves in a bottle.

    Same thing all “leaves.”

  5. deowll says:

Um, I wonder how many of the crop circles in Europe are made by people that are high?

  6. sargasso says:

#5. There are Europeans who aren’t high?

  7. green says:

Bah, the poppies in the back garden aren’t of the opium variety. Could have been an interesting friday night.
