BBC NEWS | Gazprom seals $2.5bn Nigeria deal — Even the BBC doesn’t notice that the name of this company is a bit dubious!

Russia’s energy giant Gazprom has signed a $2.5bn £1.53bn deal with Nigeria’s state operated NNPC, to invest in a new joint venture.

The new firm, to be called Nigaz, is set to build refineries, pipelines and gas power stations in Nigeria.

Analysts say the move could further strengthen Russia’s role in supplying natural gas to Europe.

The agreement comes during a four-day African tour by Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.

As well as forming Nigaz, Russia is keen on developing a trans-African pipeline to transport Nigerian gas to Europe.

This could further reinforce Gazprom’s already-strong influence over Europe’s energy supplies.

Nigaz – You gotta admit it is funny and maybe even guilty of truth in advertising.

I still chuckle every time I see Gazprom in the news. Makes me think of that German Chancellor who “made nice” with the Greens, shut down Germany’s nuke plants (leaving Germany at the mercy of fossil fuel prices) then left office and got a nice cozy exec position with… Gazprom. ROFL Eco-nuts are sure gullible!

I suppose if you have an LPG powered car you can have nigaz under the hood.

    How did it all start?

    Dear Sir:

I am a member of the Nigerian gas and oil discovery organization, and we have discovered that 99% of our wealth is location directly under the grounds owned by my late grandfater M. Obumfu Agara. Unfortunately, the deed holders are requesting that a foreign organization….

And the rest. Because, if it did, I am TOTALLY signing the next message I get as NOT SPAM!!!!

And, of course, only “brothas” and “sistas” can have any business dealings with the company that require saying the name.

  14. Raff says:

I currently have a deal going with some nigaz from Nigeria ! They are going to deposit some funds from a recently deceased member of their ranks into my account, I get 1/4 of the deposit and only have to let them use my account!

    I’ll be rich… RICH! NIGAZ!

  15. Odd… I thought Shell owned Nigeria.

  16. amodedoma says:

Oh come on, you think the Russians even know about the ‘N’ word? Titheads, it I’m sure it’s a simple combination of Nigeria and Gas(Z). What I do find somewhat alarming is how Russia is using it’s own hydrocarbon reserves to buy up foreign supplies. Somehow I don’t think I’d like to depend on the Russians for my fuel, not that I like depending on Arabs either. Russia’s been buying up european fuel interests and pushing their gas pipeline here too. I think this is not a coincidence, it’s part of a determined strategy.

    #17,

Odd… I thought Shell owned Nigeria.

Only the “geria” part. The Rooskies own the “Ni” to go along with their “gaz”.

If the Rooskies ever pick up the Welsh gas properties the company would be something like Walgaz and everyone could make cetacea fart jokes.

  18. Benjamin says:

#18 is right. Ni= Nigeria. gaz= gas. This is truly sophomoric humor.
